how to make the AI attack you in battles
Im sick of the AI just running to highest perch and just sitting there when I attack them. It's really annoying especially since they have 2-3 generals in every one of their armies so im losing all of them using brute force. Is there any way to make them go on the offensive? They do this when they attack as well.

If you initiated the battle on the campaign map, then the AI will tend to camp in hills and/or forests. It knows that all it has to do is wait for the timer to wind down to defeat you. I'd do the same thing ;)

In my experience there are several situations that *ensure* the AI is going to attack:

1. They start the fight on the campaign map
2. You attack their last stack when it is out of movement points, and it has basically no men left in it. For example, if you heavily defeated the AI in an earlier battle, and all it has left is a general and one yari sam unit, it will usually charge your full stack on the battle map. I don't know if this is because the AI figures it's best to get into melee quick because it's so weak at this point, or if CA programmed some "diehard-bushido-blaze-of-glory" protocol that is triggered when it has just a couple units left :D.

There are situations that will *greatly increase* the chance of the AI moving off a hill to attack (NOT ensure it!).

1. If you move all of your archers or arquebuses a big distance in front of your main force, the AI will often be tempted to charge down on them with horses. If some of these horses include the AI general's unit, and you engage that unit with one of your melee or cav units, then the AI stack will very likely come down from the hill.

2. If you make an attack on the AI, and a lot of your units rout, the AI might chase them. You can actually tell your units to withdraw after making an attack to make this happen. This doesn't always work though, and you could cause massive casualties for your own guys by accident.

3. If the AI "feels" it is stronger, it will often attack you, even if you are the attacker on the campaign map. For example, if you 500 men and the AI has 2800. This doesn't always happen though, like if you move onto a ridiculously high hill right at the beginning of the battle.

4. If you start doing a lot of damage to the AI with fire bombs, catapults, guns or bows, they will usually "get sick of it" and attack. Not always though. Once I actually used all the ammo up for my arquebuses: they just kept shooting till they ran out and the AI never moved, evne though entire units were destroyed and routed from the gunfire.

5. If the AI has massive superiority in a particular unit type. Example: AI has 6 units of cav and you have 0, or AI has tons of katana sam and you have nothing but yari ash.
With smart use of archers you can draw out single units and beat them easily, after routing a couple of units the AI will usually do a mass charge.

Skirmishing with bow ashigaru in loose formation has worked well for me. If the enemy have a lot of archers, use trees to cover your advance. If they're in trees, use one unit to draw them into the open and slaughter it.

With patience and careful use of terrain, you should be able to beat an army camping on the hills.

Yeah the skirmishing works great like you describe.

I found a good way to draw AI units out is to deliberately send a general out with your archers. The AI will usually send a spear unit or two to try and get your general, at which point you can shoot the spear unit with your bows whilst still out of range of AI bows. This is great if the AI has bow superiority.

The AI will usually run back to their own lines if you bait them too close to yourself, but you can then move back in repeat the process.

Like Scipio said, after a couple AI units get destroyed this way, the whole AI stack will usually make a charge off of the hill.

Wow, people are ACTUALLY MAD for the AI being smart?
This is one of the dumbest AIs in the history of Total War. The 10 year old Medieval II AI is way smarter than this one.

The game is suppose to be all about REALISTIC warfare.
TW games have not much in common with realism. They favor dumbed down rock-paper-scissor mechanics and fantasy units (katana samurai, battlefield ninjas) over historically accurate games.

I don't suppose it will ever occur to you that on one listens because you consistently talk out your ass like a complete imbecile.
