How to navy?
I really want to learn how to fight naval battles myself, it just looks so cool. But, unfortunately, I do not understand naval tactics the way I understand land tactics, I just don't feel the battlefield. I don't know how to outmaneuver enemy ships, how to use wind to my advantage, how to compose and place my fleet and so on.
So, guys, any tips and tricks for the aspiring admiral?

first of all navy battle is broken, and evey time some modder try to fix it, they keep add more then that, so its not a fix but a navy gameplay overhaul change again...

but here is what navy is about, if you do have a admiral on a ship ( not a point out pretend admiral ) do not loose that ship in the battle first , try protect that ship with the others ,
but navy is like chess send the small pawn first in to create havoc , then rest of the fleet

see ships group formations ( in game help menu ) , now you have a idea , its not about all ships in one line untill cannons change warfare but its actual a moral breaking warfare, but as all tactical has a downside , sometimes its better to kill all the little ships first then try go after the big once
this is a known old tactical kill the weaklings before all go after the big ships

cannons warfare is much more harder to explan its like use ships bad angle to attack them, there where the cant defend themself, problem here is cannon ship broad side is the strongest

so all warfare with such ships is risky as hell, who has best experience crew and lucky shoorts and evade sailing never sail in strait line ( but this game sail in strait line )

and other tip is best to let a ship get hit from both side before it loose moral or take to much damage,

and never let AI do ships battle you simple get to much damage on all ships
auto resolve battle in S2 is worst option but it seem to be better in FOTS

ps
and with on 1-6 genral only then many dont uee a real (admiral in ships fleet) sea general because we have to few of them heroes general , but i once did see a mod with hire way more then you need, this might be a solutions
but again so can all the ai they typical have 2-3 generals in every army
while we have 1 only spread out in every borderlines or frontlines so
but its kinda odd, i have a navy general on land and get boost to seafare but he actual boost it even more if he was on sea but i cant afford it, and that how most play the game.

maybe another steam user is much more experiance with this sea warfare then me and know alot more and better with it, we could use a real 100% better guide, then this there is today, or maybe this is just what we already doing is good enough.

i do know one thing, watchout for mori clan if they get stong on campaign map
that +10 to people on ships is actual a great boost and you can loose alot of fleet to them
imo the best clan on the sea.

just spam bow kobaya, unlock fire arrows as soon as possible and burn down everything you see;).
Push forward, shoot fire arrows, retreat, until cooldown is off, push again, shoot fire arrows and retreat. needs a bit micro but this was the easiest and the cheapest way to defeat every navy.

But I want to do things with style, not just zerg rush enemies. The thing is not that I can't dominate the seas, but that I want to dominate them myself.

I'm sorry, may be that's just me, but I had a hard time understanding this post. Could you refresh it a little bit?

i have tried correct it but this game has 3 campaigns and sea battle is not the same in any of them

Rise of the samurai , more a melee ships fight
shogun2 melee/shoot them down
fall of the samurai shoot them down ( wooden ships era is over )

Exactly what I do and it is very effective.

and dont only have kobaya they will loose to even a trained medium bune,
and that tactic will not work on higher game level

Just spam Nanban trade ships and destroy stacks of enemy navies with only 2 ships :P

I don't know what you mean by style. You asked for advice and this is what works. You rush in and shot fire arrows and pull back until you can use fire arrows again. It is very effective. Try to concentrate four bow ships on one enemy and watch it burn. That means hit one end of their line. Don't match ship for ship. The only ships that is more effective are the Europeon. Their guns will destroy anything at very long range and can turn in place. I don't even attempt to fight them.

I just try to have a strong enough stack that I can auto-resolve against smaller fleets without losing any ships. The AI rarely uses full stack navies, preferring instead to use lots of small fleets for blockading.

In the event I do come up against a full stack, I generally just charge the enemy with my 10 ships in a line. Melee ships in the middle, and some bow/fire bomb koboyas on the flanks.
I usually have a high level admiral from killing all the small fleets, combined with experienced ships- so they have high moral & melee attack. This gives you a real edge in melee boarding actions.

My navy stacks usually look like:
2 Bow Koboya
2 Fire Bomb Koboya
4 Medium Bune
4 Sengoku Bune

Spread out the Medium Bunes so that when you activate War Cry, it should affect almost every enemy ship along your 'line'. Giving you even more of an advantage for melee combat.

@Kel'Thuzad

yeah i also do like you but
3-4 Bow Koboya
1 Fire Bomb Koboya
2-4 Medium Bune
1 Sengoku Bune
2 Heavy Bune

all depend on where in the campaign we are talking about

and i have several guard key point on map for blocking war for pirates and other enemies
and this again depend on koku flow

Yeah i did not really enjoy the naval battles
Navies arent even very useful for your faction they can only:
-Protect Trade nodes
-Kill off an invading force which has happened only once in my 100 turnth and really didnt notice until it was too late
-Block trade ports which really didnt do much at all to the ai since they get benefits

The unit positioning is all wrong
One of my early naval battles using bow kobayas and med bunes
The enemy literraly had only 1 bow kobaya left which killed a lot of troops
This is because bow kobaya has some of its troops stationed at the edge of the bow
While most stand on an exposed platform which are killed off easily
But since the 4 men in the bow wouldnt DIE even tough i had 4 bow kobayas firing continously at they ended up killing the platform bows

Its really broken and clunky imo

@Iceira
In higher game level its even the better solution, because the upkeep costs are higher. Spamming cheap bow kobaya with a lower upkeep is way more effective than all those medium or heavy bunes. They are cheaper so that you can bring 2 kobayas instead of just one medium bune. If im not wrong medium bunes dont even have fire arrows. So like i said, attack this one medium bune with both kobayas, shoot your fire arrows and instantly retreat, get out of their range. When fire arrows are ready again, attack, shoot fire aroows,..., until its burned down. There is no reason to stay in their range and try to win the engagement.

In the Multiplayer sea battles medium or heavy bunes were the worst ships to use. Too slow for entering, in range fights they arent cost effective.
