what does stand and fight actually do?
I don't see any change on units around after it's active and the general is just sitting

It does what it says it does, when you mouse over the ability on the unit card. It's pretty self explanatory, It helps if you take the time to read, rather than just clicking stuff.

"improves melee attack and rate of fire"

I don't see any change in those unit stats before and after the ability is activated/formed

The unit card just says "+3 melee attack for all infantry under the general" which indicates nothing about the actual ability

No need to be passive aggressive over 20+ year-old faulty descriptions

S2 doesn't like making buffs visible. We'll just to have to believe it.

It shows. You need to look at the unit card to see the stat gain.

the fire rate stat remains the same for my ranged units so is only melee improved contrary to the description?

It gives +5 to reload skill which is nothing, I thought it gave morale, but that must be all the passives morale modifiers kicking in, I never bother with the skill, its defensive skill, not much synergy for rush comps.

Also gives +2 melee attack.

There's a bow ashigaru unit right next to the yaris which I also checked, they get a bonus to reload as well. I don't feel like doing another screenshot though.

The change is the little bit of green, when your general's aura hit's a unit. Also stand and fight makes your general unmovable. So if units aren't in his range, then they won't be affected by the buff.

It is really useful and I always get it. The main thing it does is vastly increase the size of the general's influence radius. You can see this circle when you hold down the space bar. Any of your units within this radius will automatically have higher morale.

The bonus to melee attack and missile reload rate aren't massive but they are nice to have.

If you use it you'll notice that your armies are more effective because they'll be a lot less likely to rout, and they'll cause more casualties with those reload rate and melee attack bonus.
