The solution to this has turned out to be not starting the .exe as administrator.
In Rome and Medieval 2 in order to avoid random crashes you must run the game as administrator (right click on the .exe file-properties-compatibility-check the box). So I thought to do the same thing in Shogun: i downloaded it and run it as admin.
Have you ever played with any mods?
Ok.
Make sure you are not subscribed to any of them on steam.
Locate this directory:
C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Shogun2
Note: Your drive may not be C:\ (it depends where you installed the game)
Note: <User> is the default for your username on your computer. Your username may be different.
Note: AppData is a hidden folder. Either check the box to view hidden items in windows explorer or, search for the folder as %AppData% to locate it.
When you have found the folder, back up any screenshots or save game files that you want to keep.
Now delete the Shogun2 folder at that location.
Next, if you have them installed, uninstall the mod tools The Assembly Kit and TEd.
Check your Data folder for any mod .pack files in there and move them out if there are any.
This will give you a clean install. Now verify your game files on steam and launch the game.
At the launcher, open the mod manager and confirm that there are no mods listed there. Not that they are not selected, check that there are no mods. If there are any we need to figure out where they are and why they are there.
If there are no mods there, launch the game and confirm that it works.
If it does, close the game, resubscribe to mods, copy your save games and screenshots back and all should be well.
None of this works and I can't start a new game
