There also more stat bonuses in Warhammer which change things up.
It's also that, if you look at stats, melee units just tend to have better defensive stats in Warhammer relative to offensive stats, as well. Empire spearmen have 20 MA and 42 MD. Empire swordsmen have 32 MA and MD. And the units that do have better offensive than defensive stats don't perform well, because they're vulnerable to the game's more deadly missiles and artillery (and there's magic, too). Meanwhile, in Shogun 2, even yari ashigaru have more MA than MD. I think only yari samurai and their variants have more MD than MA. So when you have two offensively focused units fighting each other, it's going to lend itself to quicker fights.
Maybe thats why its so good seeing battles in Shogun 2, and Rome 1, and Empire total war.At the end its just a game , and battles should be fun to watch.Thats why I hate health bar in the newer total war games
