This will be influenced by a multitude of factors.
Provinces are the largest contributing factor. They will bump up the rating significantly with each new addition.
However renown won through the exploits of your armies will also have a lesser impact.
The difficulty you are playing on will also impact this threshold.
If you believe some of the advice out there, keeping close relations with the existing Shogun further reduces the impact of your Renown gain. (Id love to see this be confirmed as true but remain suspicious as the only difference i have noted is if you directly go to war with him).
If you are allied with the ahiskaga, before realm divide, it gives you a couple more province gains before you trigger realm divide. I have tested this out, and I am quite positive this is how it works. I don't know about just being friendly. if you occupy a province bordering Kyoto, and are not at war with their allies or them, they will almost always want a trade agreement and alliance with you.
I often ally with Ashikaga and have never noticed that this delays RD. Any longstanding ally will tend to stay at peace with you for at least a few turns after RD, but eventually they'll declare war on you.
Making an alliance is useful with Ashikaga, and they will almost always agree to an alliance if you aren't at war with one of their existing allies. Getting military access to their lands is a good way to avoid the annoying forests around Iga and Yamato, and you can park your armies next to kyoto and get their amazing replenishment bonus.
