You're probably finding that once units are in combat, if you have guard mode on then they refuse to do anything but stay in combat. Try turning off guard mode, or if it's already off try turning it on and see what happens.
If my yari ashigaru are in spear wall standing in place waiting for the AI to attack them, I will turn on guard mode. This keeps them in place so they don't start chasing the enemy or getting pulled out of formation. But when I want the yari ashigaru to move in spear wall, I will turn off guard mode so that they keep moving forward.
Guard mode's effect is pretty noticeable if you put bows or matchlocks on a castle wall. I tend to turn on their guard mode because otherwise they might start moving around the wall randomly when fired on. But I find that when the enemy crawls into my castle and I try to get my bows/matchlocks to pull back away from them, if they have guard mode on and are under melee attack then they'll get stuck trying to fight the AI in melee, and they won't respond to my move order.
