You must always ask for koku for trade deals - rarely get it though. But mid game in particular I can get 20k especially if I got attractive export like warhorses.

How to make a trade agreement:

Go to the diplomacy tab. If there's a gray icon or a brown rectangular icon in the bar with a clan's name, you can trade with them. Click on the clan's bar, and select "Request Trade Agreement." The clan will say yes or no. If they say no, then just ignore it and try again another turn. I find that often clans will refuse to trade with me unless I have warhorses.

How to get a trade node:

There are 5 trade nodes in the seas around Japan. In order to "capture" them you have to put trade ships on them. These can be hired from a trade port. Then you will get extra income from the trade node.

General trade advice:

- if a clan wants money to make a trade agreement, be careful. Often they will beg you for 500 or more (sometimes even outrageous sums like 40,000) and then the next turn cancel the trade agreement the next turn. Then they beg for more money to make a trade agreement, and will cancel the trade agreement the next turn over and over again. Just refuse to pay them unless the fee is really small, like 100 or less.

- build trading ports to get more naval trade routes. If you only see a few clans in your diplomacy tab, you can send out a ship to "discover" more clans on the map which might trade with you.

- warhorses are the best trade good. They aren't worth the most money but they're in the most demand. As I said, other clans will often refuse to trade with you until you get warhorses.

- a clan liking your or not doesn't seem to have much affect on making a trade agreement. If a clan is best friends with you, they might still refuse to trade with you. And a clan that hates you might make a trade agreement with you.

- keep an eye on different types of trade goods, because some of them are useful to build certain buildings. Iron is probably the most useful because it lets you upgrade the sword school and upgrade blacksmiths. There are only two iron-producing provinces. If you aren't able to take over these provinces, make it a priority to trade with a clan that has one of these provinces.

- don't rely too much on trade for your income, the AI will attack all your trade routes and blockade your trade ports and your income will plummet. If you build a lot of markets and upgrade your farms you'll be a lot safer because your land economy will be way stronger. I always avoid getting the trade nodes because I find that they don't make all that much money, and the AI will either attack my trade ships and push me off the node or raid my trade routes so I don't even get access to the trade node resource at all.
