b) if you group units without setting a formation, then yes when you order them to move they will automatically set themselves into a very weird formation. Either you can set your own formation or turn off the formation. The formations are the menu on the left that appears when you make a group.
When I make formations I usually want them to be set in one horizontal line. However the game likes to be annoying and put samurai into multiple lines, or put cavalry in front of one another instead of side by side. Turning off the formation will prevent this, and let you set the group in a line.
To turn off formations, press ctrl + g. Then when you hold down the mouse button they will create one horizontal line rather than getting set weirdly.
I find that these formations work for me:
bow or matchlock units: press alt + 2 (this makes a line usually unless you have something like fire bomb throwers as part of the group)
samurai units: press alt +3 (this still makes two lines, but at least it puts one big line up front then a smaller line behind it. if you want one line you can turn off formation with ctrl +g)
cavalry units: press alt +5 (this puts the cavalry side by side)
Hope that makes sense. Probably what you want is turning off formations with ctrl+g. I suppose you could also call it unlocking the formation, because when you do it, it makes a lock icon disappear from the group in the bottom unit cards.
Crane's Wing (alt+2): this puts bows and/or matchlocks in a line. But if firebomb throwers are part of the group they'll be put forward. I think sometimes it likes to put matchlocks in a row in front, if it does this just turn the formation off with ctrl+g.
Flying Geese (alt+3): this puts samurai and/or naginata warrior monks in two lines, with a bigger line in the front then a smaller line behind it. If you try to use crane's wing or other formations with samurai/monks it makes really dumb formations.
War of the tiger (alt+5): this puts cavalry side by side. Actually I'm not sure if this is best because I find that when I order cavalry in a group to attack a target, maybe one of them attacks that target but the other cavalry units zip off to attack other targets, which is annoying when they run right into a spear wall when you just wanted them to attack some defenseless bows. I wonder if having the cavalry lined up behind one another is best so they charge into one enemy unit one after the other.
