how to keep happiness up?
I mean specifically how to keep happiness up 2 or 3 turns after peacefully occupying the province?

I can't expand fast enough into enemy territory because if I sit still too long they're coming in with stacks! I'd like to occupy the settlement (peacefully to keep that happiness up), maybe stay 2 turns to repair and start construction, then move on to the next settlement. But if I do that, bam..rebellion...

You need to build temples or on Fall of the Samurai you need to build police stations.

- get any tech upgrade that raises happiness or repression
- get a daimyo honor level of I think 3, anything less and you get -1 global unhappiness. So don't loot and try to avoid breaking alliances.
- in Shogun 2 put a metsuke and/or monk in the province capital
- in Shogun 2 build sake dens and/or religious buildings
- in FOTS put a isshin shishi or shinsegumi in the province capital
- in FOTS put a geisha in the province capital with happiness upgrades
- in FOTS build a police station and in general try to convert the province 100% to your faction

A city you take over will be unhappy at first but it goes away after a while. This happens quicker when you have more happiness/honor/repression upgrades.

exempt that particular city from tax. Keep your honor high. Garrison a few troops for a few turns if you have to. I play on legendary and barely ever build temples or police stations, maybe just 2-3 temples or 1-2 police station(s). a sake dojo would be better for straight up happiness anyways. I typically will build a temple in a holy site and a police station wherever i am upgrading to legendary dojo so i can build shinshigumi police force. I also barely ever mess with tax overall rating, only exempt certain cities. Low tax hurts short term, high tax hurts long term, normal tax is 100% totally fine the entire campaign.

for a rebellion to happen a city has to be unhappy 2 turns in a row. so you can exempt every other turn with no risk of rebellion.

In 2 player coop if you are player 2 and savvy about it, you can skip exempting, then do it on player one turn, then after your turn begin unexempt and all you lose is the growth from unhappiness, but you still tax at normal rate every turn. Basically tax is calculated at the end of everyone's turn but happiness and hence rebellions are calculated at the beginning of your turn so all you have to do is have the city at least content at the beginning of your turn, but not when tax is collected ;)

Depend on the play style

Oda player can play with minimum tax rate(10% tax) and still have full stacks that can jump from castles to castles in a pinch.
Minimal tax gives -1 public order instead of -4 from normal
Level 1 castles have +4 repression
That's 3 happiness in a province, and since most peacefully occupied cities will have like 6 resistance, you can leave in 1 or 2 turn.

Building sake dens is much more cost effective if you're not playing as a clan that close to Kyushu(Christians), in which a temple might be a good idea.

Cheap ashigaru garrisons.

Always picks up honor retainer for your daimyo when you have the chance.

Monk agents garrisoned in cities can give extra happiness, upgrade the inspire city skills.

I usually turtle for the first 50 turns, taking 5-6 provinces and building up an economy and a base for producing my good troops, then I go on a conquering spree with 3-4 stacks. At this point, every city I capture I instantly repair the citadel, delete all their buildings and immediately build a sake den and a monastery. They both give public order bonuses. I never leave my armies there for more than one turn.

Exempt them from taxes if you have to.

The method I use is build sake dens and leave the city undefended for a turn or two. That creates rebels, and after you kill them you get experience for your commander and province gains happiness from "military crackdown", which is usually enough until sake den gets build. I find that much more fun and much more effective than removing tax.

depends on what clan you're playing as, but try the KISS method in TW games. Just keep it simple stupid: in S2, having monks and metsukes oversee towns, army garrisons, sake dens, temples and happiness tech research (left side of chi tree) will solve most issues. Taxation beyond normal is also a big factor. Also check the region's religion or allegiance, if it's not in line with your clan's religion or allegiance, you run the risk of rebellions. Looting is a no no if you're planning to keep settlement (although it also depends on the playstyle).

You could just accept the rebellions and beat them.
