Its simple take enough territory and when Realm Divides happens declare yourself a republic, keep in mind all the remaining clans will attack you.
At the moment I am playing with a friend in (Cooperative). Saga and Satsuma (emperor's followers). And the game did not ask us to choose anything (which side we want to choose). Not only that I had more provinces seized. And my economy is 2 times stronger. But again, we were given no choice. And the emperor appointed my friend ....

Im not sure how Muliplayer campaigns work btw im fairly certain you can't do it in coop - I'm not even sure you can do it in head to head ether...

To win a republic run (single player) you need to realise a few things:

1 every single clan in the game WILL declare war on you this is not as a guide once said
'wink wink give us a few thousand koku and we will forgot about it' no this will be war to the death - yours or theirs.

2 you will lose most of your trade income except for trade with the west.

3 all of your Imperial or shogunate agents/troops will disband oh and did I point out that EVERY clan in the game shogunate or imperial is coming?

So what can you do?

heres my personal cheaklist:

make sure every province has happiness buildings (inns/police) and that you have T2 police in at least every other province to produce indepentant allegence any higher than t2 will be Imperial or Shogunate and thats no good....

spend multiple turns before declaring independance building up a war bank I recormend at least 30k - some players recon 100k but I find that excessive

personally I would recormend you have railways up and running as well as drydocks to produce Iron ships - make sure whatever you produce that you control all naval access points to your territory to prevent armies landing behind you.

Oh and one thing make sure you have ninjas/veterans trained up

Also I would say you need AP shells explosive shells, happiness techs + 4 spare happiness in all cities

have at least two if not three stacks with high quality troops ready to march forwards.

You will prob need almost a year in game time to pull all of this off!

Just before betraying your former masters consider sending out all your Ishin shsi/shogun counterpart to incite riots- dos not matter if they are enemy or ally - they all will be after you go Independant
