You want for purposes of comparison something that does take an insanely long time to work thru, go fire up an ME campaign in Warhammer. By mid campaign it's absurd.
And it will likely become even more comical when W3 comes out if they do in fact manage to merge all three together for the final ME iteration. Probably hit the button and go to lunch.

I suspect the main delay is the game stopping to play agent/army movement animations (Even if you dont see them)
Just to play the animation of them walking. Though this is a guess.Someone might try modding out agents and see if it goes faster xD
