Samurai Retainers
What is the best use of retainers? They are too slow to sally out and try to neutralize bowmen. On the walls, they can be shot at by besiegers. Once the gates are open, cavalry can easily beat them. If I have samurai as part of an army with the garrision, I just throw the retainers to help one samurai unit I picked at random.

Fair enough, but I want to know the best role. It isn't to silence attacking archers. It isn't to counter cavalry. Are they like katana samurai in terms of role?
yes they are

they are ideal for early yari ashigaru armies

They are a free unit

Means you can send them to die attacking the enemy and they will replenish by the next siege

And I mean the very next siege, even if it's on the same turn

it Depends on the situation.
in the Early game there's going to be these situations:
1. That 1 Samurai Retainer vs 8 Yari Ashigaru 4 Bow Ashigaru Armies
The only use of those Samurai retainer is just to defend the wall where there's no Bow Ashigaru attacking, or far from the Bow Ashigaru Range.
You may still lose, but Samurai Retainer in level 1 Castle can at least take down 200 Yari Ashigaru before going down.
2. Early Armies vs early armies.
it also depends on your Army Composition, and Castle Level, as Level 2 Castle also bring a Yari Ashigaru Garrison.
if you have level 2 castle, and both Samurai Retainer and the Garrison Ashigaru, put them outside and put some of your bows near the wall, the 2 units could take attention of at least 3 groups of enemies, literally at best situation makes 9 Units fight against 2 units while the 9 is getting shredded by your bows.
and once the 2 Garrison unit broke they will retreat, and if you're lucky the enemy will chase the Shattered unit to the corner of the battlefield, once happen and literally 4 "Men" of Yari Ashigaru managed to take 3 units of Yari Samurai out of battle.

in Late game the Retainers are just there to stand and fight to the death, and if you have an army in the castle it would be too big that the Retainer may not take part.
but if you have 19 units and get those Retainers, I suggest sallying them out with 1 sacrificial unit of Yari Ashigaru(optional), just to F |_| C K around with the AI, who might chase those Retainers, freeing more units.

Cool thanks. i've been using them as either "stick to a samurai unit to help' or "free nagitana samurai-like unit" but I really shouldn't think like that

Awesome. So I don't even need to be like "well, 2 more armies are going to attack this turn"?

Thanks man, that sounds like good advice.

In the early game I usually just put them on the wall where ashigaru units climb up, as they climb up 1 by 1 they get cut down and lose moral quickly.
Later on I do the same and if they somehow survive to the end I send them out as the first to deal with any left over enemy archers :P

That's impossible, their number and morale will be hit pretty hard in late battles they will rout instantly when leaving the top floor
