Best overhaul mod for fots? or should i stick to vanilla?

i forgot to add that it's mainly to improve battle ai/balance and realism. If there are a few mods that just help the ai in battle, i'd like that to. i was looking at the total carnage mod.

what i really dont want is just a metric jesus ton of mods slowing down the game. so i'm trying to keep it "less is more". so one really good overhaul mod, or 3-5 really good mods to make up for it.
