Naginata vs Katana Sam
I’m just spitting some thoughts here, i’m not sure what to make of them lol.

I’m thinking of a flat melee army for castle sieges for fun.

I noticed in campaign mode that, with no upgrades, a Katana Samurai will always munch up a Naginata sam of the same rank.

However when maxing Upgrades with a preference to armor for surviving ranged in a siege attack - ( I noticed after doing some maths that there is no reason to go above 9 armor against arrows, meaning a Naginata sam needs no armor upgrade, and can safely max attack),
Giving 5 armor to a Katana Samurai, or 6 attack to a Naginata Sam makes them roughly stat wise the same, with what I believe is a clear edge to the Naginata due to extra points in defence.

Naginata would be the better choice for land battles as they would get the bonus against mounted and be amazing in melee, BUT!

I noticed in castle sieges, that Naginata Sam tend to not do so well as Katana after climbing the wall, like by far ( Side note, I also noticed this with asugari archers vs spears, the archers can hold or attack a wall surprisingly well and will often perform equal to spear infantry who will have higher melee stats. I think it’s because spear infantry want to spread out more with their longer pole weapons while often getting charged into a small area, Or there is a secret debuff against spears in a castle siege….. It seems like they need to first move around to get space before they really can make an attack, but I just don’t know. They simply don’t perform well.

On a field Naginata sam with attack upgrade rock because there is plenty of space.. Like, there’s no stopping them at all, it's an unstoppable lawn mower combing the field, But hmm….

Don't think too far into it. Naginata are great melee against infantry and cav, and are one of the few samurai units capable of defeating a yari wall 1on1

It's because any unit gets tired climbing up a wall. Unless they're god-like units (looking at those cheat mods on the workship....), they're gonna get cut up by any unit at the top, especially if it's a samurai unit.

After all, even a peasant at the top can defeat a tired samurai who has to climb up a mountain.

Only in yari wall though. A katana or naginata samurai can still kill an unbreakable yari ashigaru easily. Only in yari wall do they still stand a chance (but since they are unbreakable and the enemy is tired, they'll lose almost no units if they aren't flanked in any way, which is pretty easy to avoid in a defensive siege)

naginatas are great especially if you get a armourer and add a encampment that boosts melee. Their high armor makes them survive arrow storms better and they match up well everywhere, fully trained and built in the right place and you can get their melee attack to 24 base and 12 armor and they can hang with anything :)

I like to train units in Smithing Provinces with Armor upgrade, and then train them in the Dojo for a +2 attack as well. Naginata units are trained at the Weapon Smith Province.

I find Yari Samurai to be less useful than Naginata and Katana teams, so I generally only have 1 or 2 (If that) in an army, mostly for their speed advantage for flanking or charging gun units, and their lower vunerablity to other spear units.

Even after all these years, I still manage to occasionally lose track of my cavalry, and then unless I catch it, they often get speared. -_-
