They are pro killers and spies, nothing more. and the mask only had ceremonial needs and showed what rank or clan you where from during a ritual...
Actually they were often used in battles, particularly sieges to rescue hostages or to scout.
They could also be used in battles as scouts or in units ranging from a few men to a hell of a lot more.
It was also the Iga ninja under hanzo that succesfully defended Iga province from Oda Nobukatsu in 1579 but were ultimately defeated by his father in 1580 despite a valient defence against vastly superior numbers...
Ninjas were more like high end mercenaries or fixers, they could do a one off assasination or they could be used in battles for the afformentioned rescuing of hostages or scouting or even battlefield assasinations.
After the battle of Okehazama in 1560 Tokegawa employed around 80 Koga Ninja to destroy an Imagawa outpost, they basically trashed the place and supposedly wiped out 200 of the garrison.
Ninja pretty much did everything you could think which is why I say they were more akin to mercenaries or fixers then just spies, they were used as personal guards for example or even sometimes as a police force.
They were regularly used to sneak into areas as civilians or workers to gain details on castle designs, defences etc.
So battlefield ninja's were a thing in fact the term shinobi was originally used to describe stealthy soliders....not agents or spies or assassins
the worlds leading authority on feudal japanese "Ninja's" is Antony Cummin's, who speaks medieval Japanese and translated the only known Ninja scroll to english.

But if i remember correctly there is no comfirmed succesful assassination right?
Im sure Antony talked about some in his video's,
but he made alot of them so you will have to forgive if I say just watch the expert instead of someone like myself,
for an example I made the mistake of saying he translated the only known ninja scroll when I should have said something else,
theres quite a few surviving scrolls and even a few bibles or codex's.
Oops.
hmm okay, well i just know what i read on the wikipedia page a year ago.
Are you sure they were used to rescue hostages?
Ninja, as assasin was really rare. They were soldier and scouts on battlefield.
And sometimes ninja infaltrating the opponent.
This is some last samurai, rurouni kenshin hollywood ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥...
Retainer A: You killed our daimyo with ninjas!
Retainer B: What's a "ninja"
Basically if you followed bushido and stuff, you were a samurai. If you were a dirty scoundrel then you were a ninja.
But of course everyone would SAY they were honorable
soooo were there saboteurs and combat groups and whatever that didn't follow bushido? sure. were there assassins? sure. but nobody wants to talk about that stuff "no ninjas here lol" so basically it is what it is.
as to wearing a devil mask, well basically that comes down to propaganda. think for yourself IF you are some kinda not-too-moral person, and people that aren't supposed to be moral are supposed to be carrying around devil masks, are YOU going to carry around a devil mask?
"no ninjas here"
If YOU want to get a Japanese devil mask, by all means go for it
then you can say something like "I'm a moral person that has nothing to hide, so why shouldn't I have a devil mask" (no ninjas here) lol

here, have some nostalgia.
