Three kingdoms is all about the singleplayer, MP is broken and unbalanced.
Three kingdoms is also more expensive for less content, You will have to buy the rest of the content at some point. It would be worthwhile just waiting til all the dlc is out so you can get the game and all the content instead of paying for only half of the game right now.
Here`s hoping we see a Shogun 3 in the next few years.
3K is the only TW game I really like other than Shogun 2 and Napoleon. It's very good in a lot of ways BUT it still needs a lot of balancing and some polishing. As of the latest patch it's better than ever.
RoftS is Empire Warpath.
Best said Shogun 2 FotS is DLC for Napoleon.
This does not mean that Shogun 2 would be bad in my opinion because Empire was a very good technology preview of the new Warscape engine and have a great campaign to which Shogun pales in comparison. Also this does not mean that Empire was better, everything except the campaign was improved in Shogun, but if you scratch the surface of Shogun 2 you unsurprisingly find Empire of it.
As good as the campaign improvements are(and they are pretty decent, especially coming off of Warhammer with its extreme simplification)the battles are just...meh.
Not even bad or broken like in the two Empire games(though there is an argument to be made that the balance of archery is screwed up worse than even RotS)but just meh.
Less unit variety than even base Shogun 2 doesnt help either.
Disagree entirely, Empire was a good game but it was a hot mess and required heavy modding.
The only way the underlying game of Shogun 2 resembles Empire is as all TW games resemble each other.
There is a reason why even in 2019 if you scour the internet you will see articles and ratings from 2019 post 3k that still list Shogun 2 on aggregate as the best Total war game, there is a reason why CA chose to rebrand FOTS as a Saga game to give a well needed boost to cover up the nightmare that was thrones.
A 9 year old game going up against 6 or 7 titles that came out after it can still come out on top... hell just look at how well the graphics have held up then compare those graphics to Empire which is only 1 year older....
And yet in FotS and Shogun 2 rifle infantry do the same ridiculous drill dancing at times what they do in Empire, they get bugged in the same way, and artillery targets units exactly the same stupid way as in Empire. Archers and melee driills are just the same as in Empire.
And believe me if we asked CA about this they would say: "yeah, it is the same game with better graphics and a few other improvements on a small map. We still had no clue how to improve campaign AI, but we tried a few things for lols, and now campaign AI sucks even more than in Empire, if just possible. Battle AI we managed to improve by forcing AI not to start by cavalry charge to the middle of the line infantry."
Graphics has never been the major point for me in games, so I see very well under underneath and through them.
Edit: Rome II bring some new fresh things to TW, Shogun 2 brought none. It is just slightly polished Empire with small map and different graphics.
I write this because I am very well aware of how Shogun 2 is thought to be like a different game than Empire by general public, to which I laugh a lot.
All these giant posts comparing the strenghts and similarities have nothing to do with the original question.
THREE KINGDOMS vs SHOGUN 2..... maybe you can list the pros and cons and mechanical differences between them huh?
I haven't played a minute 3K, so obviously I can say nothing about it. But on Shogun 2, Empire + Napoleon I have like 2k hours, and the point is that Shogun 2 is overrated and Empire underrated because they are effectively the same games where the newer one is like finished game but do have crappier campaign, yet you absolutely need Strongholds of the Samurai mod or else you suffer of almost as bad fortresses as they were in Empire.
I am answering to the question of OP and the point is that it is better to not take it as granted about how "super" Shogun 2 is. You better get over of that my opinion.
