Personally, Shogun 2. You can get more variety with DLC's, especially Fall of the Samurai if you like firearms

Shogun 2 is usually considered the high point of the series. Usually when Shogun 2 isn't considered the best, it's Rome Total War, the original one.

I never understood how they managed to make Rome and Attila look worse than Shogun2.
And gameplay, jeez. The region/province nonsense, no armies/recruitment without generals ever, the list just goes on.

OP,

Let's say you get some responses to your question, one that pointlessly gets asked as if there was an objective answer countless times over the years, what then?

I prefer Shogun 2. Compared to Rome 2 it is apparent that the former had a much clearer design vision. In Shogun 2 all of the game systems have their place, whereas in Rome 2 a lot of it barely makes any sense (for example the city building), and that's after it's been patched heavily.

Graphically I think Shogun 2 is actually prettier, but that is obviously bias. I just did not notice any graphical improvements in Rome 2.

One more thing to note: I much prefer Shogun 2 precisely because there is less unit variety. It is a much more rock/ scissors/ paper balance, whereas in Rome 2 there are 5 different units filling essentially the same role. I don't find that interesting at all.

Therefore, for me it's Shogun 2.

Shogun 2 is superior in my opinion, even though I like much more the Roman period.
The reason for that is how well-polished Shogun 2 is. In contrast, after years of patching, Rome 2 still is nowhere near as polished, and bugs still happen.
For instance, in Shogun 2 you have a better soundtrack, cool/fun cutscenes after you perform certain actions (like recruiting new units or using ninjas) - which also happens in Rome 2, but *much* more sparsely-, and a clan/family management which gives a greater sense of evolution throughout the game.
Overall, in Shogun 2, the attention to detail really contributes to enjoying the game much more than Rome 2. The Fall of the Samurai campaign is also amazing, so don't forget to check it out.
It's hard to objectively answer a question like that.

One thing is for sure though: Shogun 2 is a hell of a lot cheaper. Rome 2 is still $60, because of "Emperor Edition." You can get Shogun 2 on sale for like $7.50

So I'd say get Shogun 2 during the holiday sales. At worst, you're out only about $8 if you hate it. If you love it, and you get good hours out of it, it's like paying 1/2 penny an hour. Entertainment doesn't get any cheaper than that, unless you count things like taking a stroll or other stuff ;)

If you're thinking of a gift for someone else, that's more tricky.

Rome II is the better war simulation (hitpoints system, initiative, better battle mechanics moddability, line of sight system etc.).
Shogun II, on the other hand, has the better campaign play.

this game beats the ♥♥♥♥ out of Rome 2

I'm interested to read more about this. As far as I know Rome 2 had (has?) a system wherein the "armor" of units was just a threshold after which units started dying. Which meant no casualties up to a point, and then units started dying. That was weird.

What's "initiative"?

Line of sight I suppose is an improvement. I mean I've never even noticed any difference. Isn't there LOS in Shogun 2, too?

No, unfortunately Shogun 2 doesn't have los. Missile units that do direct fire, like matchlocks, need a los to shoot, but that's it.

You can still see units even if they're placed behind a forest or high ground, or something like that.

Made absolutely no difference I could see in how the game played.

Not like this is combat mission where we're actually simulating the real physics behind what's happening on the screen.

I do however remember CA making quite the to do about it like it was ground breaking, that gave me a chuckle, not unlike most of the gimmicky stuff they do in front of every new title release.
Yeah in multiplayer it made some difference, because you could do sneak attacks and feint more easily by hiding your actual strength.

It's too bad though that the multiplayer part of the game was so weak.

Shogun 2.Because it was set in Nihon/Japun/Japan/1000 Hentie Nation.
nah I just kidding
if you want a good campaign with Drama,Action, and Romance, pick Shogun 2.
but if you want a long campaign without drama,or romance, only action, pick Rome 2
if you want to be an Emperor or a Shot Gun in Multiplayer, just pick Shogun 2,you can Scan your face to a scanner, and it will make you inside the game, and battle other in online match,be aware,if you die in game, you will die in real potatoes.
