Fall of the samurai Boarding
So i came across a damaged enemy ship and attacked it with 2 of mine with intent to board and capture, but now in the battle it gives an X over the enemy ship when i highlight it for boarding, whats with this?

I never do naval battles but I think only 1 ship can board it at a time.Contrary to reality. I think this was updated to be more realistic in Rome II.

Nope not a single ship can board

I saw that it works oddly in vanilla Shogun 2. If another ship is close to the enemy it will throw a gappling hook and latch on. But it seems only one ship can actually row close and board. So two ships can be attached to one by grappling rope but only one can board. I think the grappling hook causes the ship to be held stationary.

Are they in a locked group?

Press ctrl+G to create unlocked groups. The cross also appears if you try to board surrendered or routing ships.

Naw the battle literally just started, and when i picked a ship and told to board it gave me an X, a tool tip when i held it there also said "cannot physically board"
I have also wondered about this for a long time. Some ships can board, some can't. Off the top of my head I know that gunboats can board and a couple of other types of ships can but most cannot. I've always wanted to know why.

Well if a tiny gunboat can board, then why the hell cant the other ships board?

It is very puzzling, it literally took hours of trying but a friend and I were able to succesfuly board a ship once. Generally boarding is impracticle and useless compared to sinking ships, unlike in vanilla where it was the biggest part of sea battles. I think I'm going to try doing some custom battles and play around with boarding for a while to see if I can figure out which ships can board.

Alright cause for me boarding is the most exiting part of naval warfare *cough assassins creed IV cough*
So I did a custom battle and using a fleet of every type of ship against an enemy fleet of each type of ship. No heavy ships or iron clads could board, every gunboat/torpedo boat could board, and about half of the medium sized ships could board. But only ships that could board could themselves be boarded by enemy ships meaning it is extremely rare to be able to board. I really wonder *why* this is. The only guess I have is that CA simply didn't want to change the naval battles for FOTS from vanilla to remove boarding all together but were unable to make boarding work with every ship so they released it like that.

Frankly it is just best to not board in FOTS because even when you *can* it is incredibly hard because of the quality of guns. I do however recomend that if you want a Total War game with functional and effective boarding try either Shogun 2, Empire, or Napoleon. Empire even has a pirate faction!

Well i was already thinking of napoleon, but i looked at empire too, which would you suggest between the two? Note that my favrite part of combat in Fots is lining up my riflemen and firing massive salvos at once on an enemy, also do either of them have steam workshop support?

It is a hard choice between napoleon or empire, but I would recomend napoleon. Both consist almost solely of line battles but Napoleon is just a much more polished and professional game whereas Empire, though it has a larger map, has more diverse factions, and many more mechanics, and pirates, it is a really buggy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with terrible AI. So I would recomend you Napoleon. However feel free to watch some gameplay of the two games before making your decision.

Like ive said ive seen both and i tend to ask someone directly about the game, so napoleon has better AI? cause i rarely play multiplayer so AI is important to me
Yeah, I too almost solely play singleplayer and co-op so AI is a big factor. Some people prefer Empire and some prefer Napoleon but I think the majority prefer Napoleon. Personaly I'd recomend Napoleon because though it is slightly smaller in scope (the campaign map is limited to only Europe and some mechanics like trading are slightly dumbed down) the game is much better looking, less buggy, has more interesting battles, and most importantly much better AI. Though I do admit that the campaign map gameplay can get a little overwhelming in Napoleon. Also remember that you can return steam games, so perhaps do a couple custom battles first to make sure that whichever you buy both runs well and is amusing enough to continue.

I hope this helps, and I also hope you still enjoy FOTS because it is a phenominal game even though the naval battles are quite terrible.
