One the common mistakes new players make is recruiting too many units early on. Until you've got a decent number of provinces under your control you're likely not going to be able to afford more than a full stack.

Chosokabe start with a farming boost in sengoku, an easily defendible island .
Chosokabe, Shimazu & Date are the best starter clans for Vanilla S2.

The best ways to make money(after trade nodes) are metsukes, you'll need to have 1-5(depending on the stage of the game) money making provinces, these are usually provinces with either Very fertile soil or a gold mine

Get a market and a sake Den on those provinces put on a metsuke and max out Overseeing towns tree and each town can easilly make you 6-8 thousand koku a turn

The other way to look at this since pretty much any clan can have farms, markets and ports is to ask which clans have the lowest recruitment costs, and one of those clans is Oda. As a result they are often mentioned as one of the easier clans to play (despite their mid island start position) because you can field a lot of cheap ash armies and simply zerg your way to victory with them.

the big Key for me Is after I get the "Basic" Bushido Arts (Way of Defense- Way of Sword, Sometimes Way of Spear 1st, but usually wait) -- I do the Chi Arts, specifically with the Goal of getting Terrace Farming, with a bit of patience, and just defending/attacking only weak clans, you'll see all your provinces upgraded, and see the Koku roll in -- Sake Dens are cheap and easy too, and also give a Happiness boost, and as the above quotes -- Markets also give $$$, and once you get settled, you can tear down a Market or Three, If you need to Later build a Sword Dojo, Horses, etc

I like Shimazu for a relatively easy start. Develop the farm land. I will often times research the Chi arts till I have land consolodation, then switch over to the Bushido arts. I put sake dens, markets and temples in each town I'm not going to be recruiting from. I ignore the trading nodes till I've completely taken over the Shimazu starting island and have pirate dens and military ports able to recruit 3rd rank ships capable of shooting fire arrows, then I go after the trading nodes. Also, I juggle my tax rate between medium and high every other turn. Towns wont rebel if you switch back and forth every other turn, and the cash at the highest tax rate can be very substantial. You just can't leave it on the highest tax level for two consecutive turns, towns WILL rebel if you do. I always fight the naval battles myself, I can usually win a stack against stack battle losing none or at most one-two ships, whereas if you auto settle the fight you can lose half or more of your stack easily. And when it comes to naval battles, always remember to cross the "T", all your flame arrow firing ships attacking the end of the enemy battle line, pitting 6-8 flame arrow firing ships against one enemy ship at a time.

I don't think there is a "best" clan but if you can control the far left island whether that's as the Chosokabe, Mori, Otomo, or Shimazu you're definitely better off then say the Oda, Hojo, Takeda, etc. Aside from an island position which gives you safety because you're isolated, the island (kyushu i think) also has a number of regions with great farms that you can exploit. Add to that the surronding trade nodes and you are very well off financially.

That's true, but if he can't manage money cheaper troops aren't necessarily going to help him. He might be able to get some big armies quick and take regions but without monetary management he won't be able to keep those towns.

Look, you have to know exactly how much money you are spending and manage your finances accordingly. The number 1 best way to pick up money is to upgrade your farms. they are in every province and should be able to provide plenty of income. Metsuke and Ninja chain are the next best ones, they provide nice extra cash. The next is probably gold mines, and then trade ports. Tbh, trade is never a good thing to rely on, since every faction will eventually betray you. It is quite simple to manage your funds so long as you do the basic math when buying units. Although the extra 200 made from upgrading a farm may seem small, in the long run with many upgraded farms you will have a solid income, depending on the amount of provinces you have.

Best way- Trade node
-Hard to defend at start
-Can lead to meeting other clan that will declear war on you
Quickest- Sell military acess to clans that are connected to you.
-Can make other clans more easily to backstab you
Doubledge sword- cycle clan tax rate between normal and very high
-You basically trading long term growth for short term gain.
Usal way- Upgrade farm and market
-It take up a lot of start up captail compare to gain
Small gain- Ask for money in dipolmacy
-You can ask for money in trade agreement, peace agreement, and ect

Or you can get to the point where you can have the highest setting of tax and your honor and tech has made it possible so then none of your provinces rebel. It's annoying though, because now I cannot artificially start a rebellion to test out a new force, say, an all gunpowder force.
