Civ IV was the peak of the series for me, nowadays it's DLC spam. Sadly it's not an isolated case, look at the Europa Universialis series......
Rome 1 and Medieval II were the best in the TW series. Ever since CA doesn't seem to get everything right in one game anymore.
The only one I would say was better for its time was civ4, but I don't play it anymore, it feels dated. Shogun 2 does not. Crank the graphics up to ultra and it still looks better then brand new games that just came out months ago.
This game is an industry standard. Really barely any games have ever lived up to the production value that shogun 2 has.
Its been so long I cannot comment on age of empires,
in civilization 3 and 4 are the best imo, 4 more so because of countless mods
in TW shogun 2 is king imo, then atilla, all the others I don't play anymore, like rome 2 (bad gameplay) and medieval 2 (wretched graphics).
If you like Shogun 2, you'd probably enjoy Nobunaga's Ambition: check out the Steam store to take a look at it.
If you are into more hardcore, historically accurate samurai and Asian warfare (but with a simplified campaign system), I'd recommend Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun also on Steam.
