The slightly less obvious suggestion would be since your'e located in the midst of at least a three way war involving yourself, Uesugi and Takeda from the outset pick a side as you'll need to ally with someone and quickly take out the other two..
Backstabbing Imagawa is your best bet early on, with those 3 provinces some markets and upgraded sake dens you can support 2/3 basic armies to defend it. If you need a quick influx of cash then attack & loot somewhere closeby and withdraw immediately. Let the enemy take it back and repair it, loot it again when you need cash! I generally don't go in for alliances as they can get you drawn in to wars you aren't ready for, plus as you said they always backstab you eventually. Vassals are useful for the honour gain and support, but can also cause unforseen conflicts. Hojo is a slow burner really, spend the early days getting strong and compact. Burst out when you are ready :)
and try to get Takeda an Ally against Uesugi with some repeated payments
Destroy your Siege Workshop at Odawara Castle.
Instead, try to use the normal unit composition.
Also making Ogigayatsu as a vassal is a good move, since you don't really need much territory at start(since you already have 2,and one of them has Nuggets, and the other ones has Weaboo sword maker).
Always keep an eye for the imagawa, they're your only non-War rival.
if you go Right(West) There's alot of Fertile farms, and some good resources like Wood, and Iron.
and going Left(East) You can find Horses,Ninja Schools,Library.
I suggest going West, since it could support your economy,Blacksmith Potential and Navy.
I gave hostage to both imagawa and Takeda and made them allies and trade partners in hope they don't backstab me this time.
I made Ogigayatsu a vasal at start, but one turn after that (or in the same turn) Satomi invaded and captured that province without consequences wut? Since my army was still in area i declared war on them, destroyed their weak army and recaptured Ogigayatsu.
They send another one to siege it, with reinforcements i won that one too. Satomi had no army left so Shimosa and Kazusa was easly captured around turn 12 i belive.
Takeda (5 provinces) and Imagava (7 provinces) are scary now, two full armies, blobing like crazy, tho they still my alies i bet it wont last long.
So i have to rush Satake asap before takeda grabs them i think, becuase then i will be locked.
