I have a Logitech Gamepad F310 and it works with Streets of Rage 3 and Shanobi as well.
The genesis used to have 2 types of controllers, one with 3 buttons, (A,B,C) and later one with 6 buttons (+ X,Y,Z) was released.
I'm looking for genesis games from this collection (here on steam), that actually support the buttons X,Z,Y. Most Genesis games are fine with 3 buttons and the X,Z,Y buttons are useless, so to speak.
I just checked Streets of Rage 3 and all 3 Shinobi games. SOR3 indeed supports X,Y,Z buttons, the Shinobi games do not. The revenge of Shinobi is from 1989, I doubt the 6-button controller was out there already. Or am I missing something here?
I also checked Eternal Champions + Virtua Fighter 2, to my surprise EC supports it, while VF does not.
I'm intending to make a list of games with X,Y,Z button support, so far I have
SoR3
Eternal Champions
Controls for Revenge of Shinobi: A- Special, B- Attack, C- Jump.
What do the buttons X, Y, Z do for you?
I already stated that NONE of the Shinobi games support 6 button controllers. Eternal Champions is the only game besides SoR3 that I found so far to have 6-button support. But you might be right that there's nothing else in this collection w/ 6-button support.

Vectorman***
Vectorman 2***
* To activate 6-button mode in Shinobi III, you must use a code. Highlight "Options", hold UP and C on controller 2 (numpad 8 and del respectively by default), and hold mode on controller 1 (view/select by default), then press Start on controller 1 to select "Options". The menu should now read "Option" without an 'S', that indicates that 6-button mode is enabled.
** 6-button controller is detected automatically in Virtua Fighter 2, but the buttons are not assigned to anything until you set them in the options menu.
*** For Vectorman and Vectorman 2 the 6-button controller is only used for cheat codes. In Vectorman 1 there is a spot in the first level where you can enter "Call a bad baby dumb" and skip to the end credits. In Vectorman 2 you can get Free Movement with "u lazy bum". There's also, supposedly, "a lazy day" in Vectorman 2 for slow-motion, and entering it did make an explosion sound, but I couldn't confirm slow motion. The controls are inputted using Up Down Left Right for U, D, L, and R respectively, no need for spaces.
