This program lets you download the individual game ROMs: http://aluigi.altervista.org/quickbms.htm

(look down the page for the SEGA Classics script)

Personally I use Kega Fusion

Thanks, but stupid people like me just pay $2.99 since I can't figure that out. LOL

Now I got a question, can I extract a ROM, install a ROM Hack on it and then pack it bacK? There are some very neat hacks for Altered Beast and Golden Axe that I'd love to play.

So what'd the devs do here? Package an old rom with an open source emulator and call it a day? Nice to know that they're just selling roms then. Avoid like the plague I say.

The emulator isn't open source (they hired the guy who made JEnesis, but no source code publicly available anywhere), though it is indeed just an emulator and a collection of packed ROMs.

Yeah, it's basically selling roms, what's bad about that? The emulator works fine and is user-friendly for all the newbies out there and as pointed out, isn't open source. They didn't promise any sorto f remaster, only Sega Mega Drive and Genesis classics and this is exactly what they deliver.
They definitely put way more effort into this than all the hacks that just package old PC games with Dosbox and call it a day.

Well I don't know about hacks but you can extract roms and repack them. You can also pack other roms that are in .bin format into .pak format to work with the emulator.

Section 3 of this guide has the software needed: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=398334923

They are selling you the LEGAL OWNERSHIP of said roms

Not quite. They're selling a license, not the ownership. Small distinction, but quite important.

Except that the emulator is far from working fine. Maybe it's just a special issue with Shining Force 1, but it does freeze, crash, mess around with the in-game save and now finally managed to corrupt the emulator-side save, leaving me with at least 7h gameplay lost. But I guess I won't bother and just play it again on a different emulator, where it works just fine without any of the aforementioned issues. All in all this emulator is about as reliable as playing lottery to provide yourself with a regular income.

That being said, if they would actually provide working roms on a working emulator there would be nothing wrong with it indeed.

The launcher alone is unforgivably bad. Can't launch games directly? Have to pan through list to find a game? Games not listed alphabetically?? The game I want to play is at the very end of the list, but you can't press left to get to the end.

It's not user friendly it's bad design dressed up.

They should have provided the roms directly and offered the option to launch them directly and not be forced to use the terrible launcher.

Extracted the roms, deleted old launcher/emulate exe, replaced it with Fusion 3.64. Much better.
