Levels are still separated enough to qualify it as one imo.

More like a puzzle adventure.

I never played the game but i would ask a two questions. First does the game require or incentive back tracking? second does the game use some kind of power up to allow access to progress.

If No to either then to me, No. Now that you mention it The mega collection doesn't really offer any metroidvania games. Then again that really is a more modern game style then older generation.
No.

Its more of a maze game. You get "keys" to open the crystals, but thats usually it.

Metroid 1 was in 1986. It was an old genre.

Tails Adventure is one in 1995 (while still being split into levels), and that was on GameGear. So if they wanted to have a Genesis Metroidvania, it would have still been possible.

Ecco actually predates that term.

Tails Adventure is also supposed to be good. I always presumed the unique Sonic GameGear games where not worth playing.
OG Nintendo Master Blaster would been a metroidvania based on the remake

Metroidvanias are either Metroid or Castlevania.

You could include Wonderboy III to the mix.

Not Really those are just the parent games. Although normally a metroidvania has a few things that make them that style. Normally is the game asks you to back track with a item from a later level to get either a item, power up, or skill which is needed to progress. Metroidvania are also known for having massive interconnected maps where the Level are brought together by these connective bits. Metroidvania are also extremely story heavy compared to may side scrolling action games.

I wasn't wonderboy III way more of a side scroll er shooter game game? I remember wonderboy 1 being very close to Zelda 2 aka a side scroll er adventurer game but I didn't get past like level 2 of wonderboy III do to not playing it.

The shooter was Monster Lair.

Dragon's Trap was a rather open game with upgrades.

I think Metroid is Metroid.

Metroidvania is everything that imitates it, although the phrase is sort of incorrect since originally it was used to simply describe a Castlevania that played like Metroid, and now every Metroid-like game is branded that regardless if their tone is similar to Castlevania or not.

So I would simply brand them Metroid-likes, even if that's a duller phrase.

Well it's also besides being decent sounding they are good contrasting. Metroid is range based, high skill based for sequence breaking and Scifi.

Let's be honest the castlevania syntactic of the night for ps1. and beyond. All which has leveling, in depth plot, melee focuse, and fantasy leaning.

Thus that's a pretty big sliding scale of inspiration to to barrow from.

I'd say no. It's a very unique game. Maybe puzzle platformer? Maze explorer?

Even if some of them are similar to SOTN with some of the gameplay systems or tone, that still isn't all of them though.
