An absolute disgrace
Virtua Fighter 2 is one of the greatest fighting games of all-time, no question.

So, how does SEGA honor the legacy of game that Yu Suzuki created, that made SEGA the #1 coin-op vendor in the 90's, and made the Saturn a must-have console in Japan?

By releasing the Mega Drive / Genesis port! This port is an abomination and never should have been released when it originaly came out.

An arcade-accurate port is available to the PS3 and 360 with online play, and you give us this?

This is why I no longer have faith in this company. Because they can't even get something so simple, right. Inexcusable.

Would you have rather that they had not released it at all?

I mean, they could have just said "Forget it: we're not going to make enough money on this old game. Throw it in the archives, where it will never again see the light of day. "

Instead, they at least released a version of it. And now new fans can try it out, instead of the new blood simply passing by, and going to some of the millions of other fighting games.
Really, Sega didn't have to release this game, but were generous enough to do so anyways.

It's a ROM dump, do you understand? It's on an emulator, the same ones that have been around for the last 10 years. It requires zero effort to distribute. Nothing is "released."

You act like we should all genufelect, kiss SEGA's ring and be eternally grateful for the release of a half ass port. This port is an embarassment to the franchise, period.

I have to wonder if you've ever actually played VF2 on an arcade cabinet.

EDIT: Just to add insult to injury, this is listed under "Genesis & Mega Drive Classics" this game was ripped by every publication when it was released in 1997.
That console was dead by '97 and there was a Saturn port out already.

No one has ever regarded it as a classic, it got 3/10 everywhere for being a shameless cash grab.

How about Out Run or Super Hang-On? They were actually console classics in their time, when they were released.

Yes, it would have to be an emulator, since this is PC, not an actual Genesis.

I wouldn't say kiss their ring, but merely remember that it is their property, to do with as they see fit. I've seen a number of franchises thrown in the trash, simply because their companies feel that they won't make the millions of dollars they want.

And wonder no further: I've never played a single Virtua Fighter game, on any platform; and in general I don't care for fighting games (a bit too complicated for my tastes, and the A.I. tends to be a royal pain) aside from occasionally Street Fighter and Smash Bros.

But I have been messed over by game companies that mistreat their franchises *glares at Capcom*, and I know that it's great when a companies at least tries to be accomodating.

You're missing the point.

Imagine for a second that the only Sonic game on Steam that SEGA ever made available was the Game Gear version of Sonic 1, and they slap the "Classic" label on it.

If you've never played VF2, then indulge me. Take 1/2 a minute and watch these two; all I ask:

Arcade (out on 360 and PS3): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAxgkyiUlEA

Mega Drive / Genesis (1/2 the moves, 2D sprites, horrible frame rate): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1EsVwHdndQ

VF2 is a hallowed game; like Sonic 2, or Street Fighter II, etc.

It had a terrible port that never should have been released and should have been forgotten about forever. But this is the face SEGA chooses to show gamers on Steam.

Imagine for a second that NO sonic game was released, Game Gear or otherwise. Nothing but a giant middle finger from Sega, who would rather spend their time on making some new high-def game for the Xbox One or PS4.

As an example, can you find a single Mega Man game on Steam? Of course not, Capcom terminated the franchise. At this point, there are fans that would take even the mediocre Original Game Boy games, anything at all. And yet, it will never happen.

Finally, it's not easy to get things to emulate properly on other platforms or OS. Such as Windows 8, which is pain to get things to work on correctly. Even the Genesis Collection here often has troubles on Windows 8 (as many of this forum's threads mention). You never know if they had massive compatibility issues with getting VF2 Arcade version to render correctly.
It could be that the 3D game would require too much time and expense to get it to work correctly, and so it was just more efficient to get the Genesis port to work.

Or it could be that there was a contract issue, such as Sony and Microsoft having exclusive rights to distribute the arcade game.

Besides, it's not like they're charging a fortune for this port. Just think of it as "the poor man's Virtua Fighter 2".

I agree, the 32X version of Virtua Fighter 1 was better than 2 on Genesis, not the game for the Genesis. It's just the Genesis version, and Sega was reported as being not market savy back then, and maybe even true some today. VF Arcade series, I would like to see on Steam for PC, I'm down!

- I'm aware of Capcom's misgivings. The last thing SEGA, or any game company should do, is follow in their footsteps; really low bar.
And at least there will be Mighty No 9, so Capcom can suck on that.

- No, it's not difficult to emulate 20-year-old hardware on Windows. In fact, there isn't one game from that era that can't be played on Windows.
If compatibility issues exist, it's because SEGA doesn't give a ♥♥♥♥ enough to fix them.

An arcade accurate emulator for the Model 2 has been out for a long time. I can play Virtua Fighter 2, arcade version or any other Model 2 game, on my PC whenever I want. Thankfully.

A small, dedicated team of software engineers could build their emulator (SEGA has the damn source code) in a few short months if they don't want to purchase the source for the Model 2 emulator off of Nebula. Or just build the damn game for PC.

- There's no contract for VF2, that is absurd. Sony and Microsoft would never pay for exclusivity to a game that old.

SSF has gotten much better. I'm not talking about Sega Saturn, anyway.

MD / Genesis; they are the games available in this collection. There isn't a VF2 Saturn port, and I wouldn't want one.

Thats a lot of effort for a game not many people (besides you) actually care about. Hate to break it to you, but VF nowerdays is pretty niche. You should be grateful there's at least a version for modern consoles instead of randomly screaming about a simple 16-bit port emulation.

So, you agree that it's not worth the effort to port a game that's already been released on consoles? Right.

There's nothing random here, either (I'll assume your vocab skills are lacking, as many people use that word as a catchall).

Yeah, a lot of people care about this game, maybe not in the states, but in Japan it's an undisputed classic.

Also, calling VF niche is a moot point when you look at how many arcane games are a part of the, "SEGA Genesis & Mega Drive Classics." Doubly so when you consider that SEGA Bass Fishing is available on Steam.

I don't think VF2 on the Genesis is a bad game - frankly, I believe it got bad reviews back in the day for not being the awe-inspiring polygon fest like the real VF2, but it's still fairly enjoyable. That being said, I would like to see the likes of Out Run and After Burner (seriously Sega? Super Thunder Blade which is a piece of crap and NOT the pretty reasonable After Burner 2?) in its stead
