Losing Game Saves
When I was playing Shining Force 2, I generally kept to in-game saves, because the feel of the game was much better that way. However when I decided to close the emulator at the point where I go to, the first battle after just landing on the mainland, and then tried to continue my game a day later, my game save was lost, and instead it read as though my last save was all the way back right after you just get your first mage.

Any ideas on how to get my save back/anyone else been having the same issues? I kinda don't want to go through all that all over again.

Sadly the in-game saves don't work on the steam version you have to use the emulator save file to save your game.

Weird, Shining Force 1 retained my save, but Sword of Vermillion didn't (even when I didn't quit after saving, it said the file was "new")... is this some overlooked bug? I mean, save states are fine and everything, but not having native saving feels..... off.

In game saves currently have not worked with Landstalker. Something that I think for this emulator is that it retains the first save you have done, and nothing else. As no matter how far I play in Landstalker, the only save that appears is the one that I first made when I first started this game.

Yeah ran into the same issue with Sword of Vermillion and in Phantasy Star 2 my saves would dissapear half way through.

That would explain why sonic 3 & knuckles doesn't save properly. *sighs* Hope they will fix it, but doesn't look like it.

So the question is still unanswered...

What is the proper protocol to save the game in Shining Force 2 and others like it?

I am wondering if you simply need to NEVER use the in game saving mechanism, just keep playing... if you die, you will start back at the priest. When you are done playing the game, you press escape, save it in the LOAD/SAVE screen through the STEAM portal, and then resume again when you're ready to play.

I am going to test out my theory right now and see if that works. I'll reply shortly.

I have confirmed that this is how you should save in some RPGs where the in game save mechanism doesn't work properly.

Play the game as usual. If you die, you appear to be transported back to the priest or other save spot without losing your game progress.

When you are ready to quit the game, simply:

1) PRESS ESCAPE
2) Choose SAVE GAME
3) Pick your save slot IN THE STEAM SAVE MODULE
4) Save your game

You can then continue where you left off before.

Solved.

I found a helpful description of the problem in this other forum:

While his explanation is good I can't vouch for his solution, I tried it and was not successful.
