Shining Force 2 - Save State Editing?
Is it at all possible to edit save state files with an outside program to edit character stats, spells, items, and such? I've beaten the game on "Ouch!" difficulty, and was wondering if there's anything I can do to further entertain myself. It's a great game, and lots of fun, but I'd like to play around with it further.

Does anyone know of a way to modify stats via save states?

Edit: If it helps. the save states in the game are .PAK files.

UPDATE: I've found a solution, if anyone is wondering, the SFEdit program can edit states of both Shining Force 1 and 2.

It's free and pretty simple to use, just make a save state, then open that save state with the editor. I know it works with an emulator, haven't tested it yet for the Steam version.

All the save game files are in the documents folder under Sega Genesis Classics, they are files such as BS.sav and GS.sav in different folders.

Ah, okay. But the question still stands: can they be edited? What I mean is, can I use a specific program to open the files outside of the game and alter health, stats, items, spells, and so on?

I will send you a friend request as there is content that I can tell you in PM that I am not able to post on the forum due to game discussion guidelines.

so funny enough the super hard difficulty is harder than the ouch difficulty because the enemies gain a 25% increase to their base attack while the ouch difficulty gives a better A.I. but the enemy really doesn't need a strategist when they can 1 hit KO basically anyone not a tank

Just putting it here if someone googles like i did finding no help; i figured out you can easily manipulate stats using a hex editor on the save states, like gs05.sav for the quick save. Your heroes name is saved with even and odd letters reversed, so BOWIE would be OBIW.E (the . for missing letter), JAHA would be AJAH. Search for your hero. Here all stats are stored.

A string for a character look like this, JAHA as example from my sav:
41 4A 41 48 00 00 00 00 00 00 07 02 11 00 11 00 00 00 14 0F 0F 0F 09 09 05 05 00 00 00 00 03 03 A1 00 09 00 7F 00 7F 00 3F 3F 3F 3F 00 00 12 06 10 38 04 00 00 00 03 00

Stats are every 2 values starting with the 11'th value which is level followed by max hp, current hp, mp, attack, def, agi and mov.
I've found a solution. SFEdit is a Shining Force save game editor that works with SF1 and 2, and it lets you manipulate most of the saved stats, including giving characters spells they shouldn't have access to.

I've been using it for over a year now, I should have posted it here, but I totally forgot. It's pretty intuitive to use, too.

It does not work unless you have modified it

Oh, maybe that's because I've used it on an emulator version. Probably different save state formats. Sorry about that.
