You can't.
This is the Mega Drive/Genesis version of the game, which was a port of the arcade version.
The displaying of "credits" is a bit of a weird holdover, once they're gone - back to the start with you!

The best you can do is increase your initial health bar in the in-game Options menu.

The only way to do that is by a cheat code. Otherwise - three credits is all you get. That's how we used to roll back in the Mega Drive days.

might i ask what the infenate credit cheat is

If you hold Down+Left and press A+C+Start on the character select screen, you'll have 9 credits instead of 3. No infinite credits.

Of course it's the Mega Drive A and C, so you really have to press the corresponding buttons for that.

Double-tap forward+Attack for the former, attack+jump for latter.
