If your emulator is running slowly, there are several things you can do:

Run the emulator in fullscreen mode, rather than on the TV screen
-Check the "Start in Fullscreen" button box in Emulator Settings, or click "Fullscreen" to the left of the TV if you've exited the game
-This disables all Unity graphical effects that may be slowing your GPU down

Turn down the Unity graphics settings
-Go to the Room Settings area, and lower the graphical quality
-This will help with framerate in the Hub, and may improve performance if you prefer to run the emulator on the TV rather than in fullscreen

Disable Vsync
-Un-check the Vsync box in the Room Settings menu
-Which you may experience some screen tearing in your Hub room, this has been shown to improve emulator performance somewhat

Disable some emulator effects
-Un-check the boxes for HQ2X / Scanlines, and turn TV projection to minumum
-These settings, particularly HQ2X, will have an impact on your GPU rendering time for the emulator screen, although nowhere near as much as the above suggestions

The emulator itself runs entirely on your CPU, so if none of the above suggestions have an effect on emulation speed, your processor may unfortunately not be powerful enough to run the emulator through Unity. We have left the "Simple Emulator" as a launch option for those using less powerful machines such as laptops or notebooks.

-Another performance bug we've just found is the way the program handles Workshop Mods. Having a large number (or even just a moderate number in some cases) of mods subscribed to may cause quite a lot of slowdown on various setups. Fortunately, this is a thing we can fix, hopefully giving quite a large performance boost for anyone using mods.
-For now, keeping the number of subscribed mods low might improve performance.

even if i set the room to run at 720p, the screen is running at 1080p. my tv accuses it is 1080p, and the overlay runs in 1080p

you could let it run on other resolutions to improve performance.

Is 2.7 GHz really not enough in my laptop? My deskopt at home has 3 GHz and it still lags.
Simple launcher has no issues though and games run perfectly smooth...
Heck, even my old notebook with something around 1.2 GHz is able to run games with no issue.

How can one hub need so much resources? Can't it just unload or something while running a game?

There´s one point that you didnt comment about it, what about to lower your resolution, i mean for like 800x600 60hz, if i could do that, maybe the performance was another thing to talk about...

I'm fairly certain there's still an issue with the room itself as far as game performance goes. I'm experiencing these slowdown issues on a fairly powerful gaming PC that has a 3.4 GHz Core I7-3770 for a processor and a GTX 980 for a GPU. There is no way that wouldn't be able to handle 16 bit games from the early 90s. Even by adjusting most of the settings i'm still having performance issues. The simple launcher and other emulators (Fusion 3.64 in particular) have no problems running these games.

I will try this, but shouldn't real fullscreen be the default setting? Who on earth would want to play Genesis games but not play them in full screen?

Much respect to SEGA and everyone involved with this for finally distributing retro console games in a format and at a pricing level that actually makes sense! I'll try to buy more if/when you release more!

I'm really hoping the existing community emulators will get updated so that they can quickly grab the ROMs out of the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sega Classics\uncompressed ROMs" folder and the mods out of the workshop folder to let you easily use the content you've purchased in whatever emulators you want. The only hard part at this point is pulling the mods out of the pak files.

The whole "it's like a real room" concept is fun and all, but this program really needs to come with a quick interface that lets you instantly see all the games you own and lets you scroll through them real fast. (the "simple launcher" still isn't simple enough) Just show the titles in a simple list in a normal GUI please! And mods too!

Um, Chris, no offense, but if my Intel B960 2.2Ghz Dual-core processor can handle Sonic Generations and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed...then surely it can handle one 3D virtual room and some Sega Genesis games.
And yet, with Sonic 2 I have horrifying amounts of lag, even at minimum resolution and quality, Vsync disabled, and fullscreen TV emulation (with the filters turned off).

Surely, this launcher and game can't have higher requirements than Sonic Generations?

Vsync was the problem for me. Once I disabled Vsync, I could have all of the other settings turned up ("Fantastic" quality level, TV projection, etc) with no problem.

Using the simple launcher makes audio sound normal, but at 50 Hz, using the hub makes the game run normal, but screws with the audio.

This. I like that there's the new 3D virtual room now, but this new feature disables me from playing any of the games on my laptop. The simple launcher was all I needed, I don't need this extra fluff.
