sonic 1 plays by itself help

recently i got sonic 1, 2, and 3, and i plugged and set up my wired xbox 360 controler and when i pressed start the game was playing itself and only playing one level of each area and pressing start just repeats itself can someone help me also quick question is it now legal to play it on a emulator and play hacked versions now i got the game or does it have to be a real copy of the game?

yes it did nothing

Have you tried configuring your controller through the emulator's settings before launching the game?

yes anyway it works on sonic 2 & 3

thanks it worked, i tried when i bought the games and the option just wasnt there, now it is.
