Question about Sonic 3 & Knuckles save function.
I've read that this emulation has its own save feature. What I'd like to know is, can I use the ORIGINAL save system (those save slot "columns" that made a sort of ding noise when cycling through them back in the day) to play?

I had a port of this in a Mega Drive Classics Collection (or something like that) back on the XBOX 360, but it sucked for two main reasons: one, no connectivity, and two, it made you use a new, extremely basic and linear, save game system. You could not go back and replay levels to ensure you got all the emeralds, and I'm sure there are those out there who could manage to get all the emeralds in one playthrough but I'm not one of them.

Back on the Mega Drive, saves included your emeralds and by allowing you to replay levels gave you a fighting chance at reaching the Doomsday Zone and the perfect ending. Without this feature, I cannot see myself achieving this or indeed buying this game.

Yeah, you can use the original save system.

You should also make sure to get the Sonic 3 Complete Mod. Fixes some bugs and gives you a load of options regarding music etc.

when you finish the game, you can replay the stages to get the esmeralds that you missed and play doomsday.

Thank you all, you've just sold the game.

Some Sonic mods that add save functionality use Sonic 3 as a base even if they are a mod to an earlier Sonic game, because the emulator doesn't support save even on mods for the older games.

Yes, you can.
