It's a licensed game. The owner of the Shadowrun IP would probably want to be paid.

makes no difference to my point: the old shadowrun games were pretty much wiped for the sake of keeping the IP alive.

the 2007 Xbox 360/Windows Vista Shadowrun FPS was, but the games before that, like the Genesis and SNES Shadowrun games, weren't awful. As a matter of fact, the Shadowrun Returns companion Jake Armitage is the protagonist of the SNES Shadowrun game. if you're trying to sweep a game under the rug, you don't directly reference it in a reboot.

The problem is that licensed games tend to be owned by two companies, so both have to work together in order to actually get it released again. In the case of both of the old Shadowrun games, neither publisher is actually in business anymore, I don't think, so I don't know if anybody would legally be ABLE to release them even if they wanted to. Even if they did they would still need permission from the current Shadowrun rights-holder, and since another Developer is currently making Shadowrun games (they wouldn't want competition for those), that will not happen.

And this, my friends, is one of many reasons why modern copyright law is freaking stupid and needs to be changed. It often results in older works of art being destroyed for the sake of making newer works more appealing.

Shadowrun us owned by catalyst game labs now. Same with battletech

Catalyst owns the rights to tabletop Shadowrun. Hare-Brained Schemes owns the video game rights. The SNES Shadowrun game was made by Data Eeast iirc, and the Genesis version was by BlueSky Software.

Ah OK. I thought it was like Warhammer where games workshop owns the ip and cam give it to whoever they want for games.

That was the case before FASA closed. Then the various IPs got sold off and it became more complicated.
