What is the best way to play Sonic 2?
I agree that this is one of the best game in the entire franchise but is there a way to make it even closer to perfection?

I heard about the Community's Cut and the Decompilation.

I just play it using my emulator of choice. Mainly for performance related reasons but also because I noticed that the sound emulation of this emulator is not the best. What gave it away for me was the garbled screams in Street of Rage 3.

I dont think the game needs anything to be good.

I do agree that d3t's emulator is far from good but it does the bare minimum (I appreciate the rewind, acceleration, quick saving/loading features and the ability to simulate the CRT screen), Kega is still a supperior choice tho.

I do:

Make Tails more usefull (flying assist like in the Mobile remasters), make Tails disapear from the special stages so he won't be annoying, have Knuckles available without having to use a mod on the workshop, have a save system and level select like in Sonic 3&K so Super Sonic would be always available, add Hidden Palace back and finally have a time attack and online race.

Oh, don't get me wrong. You can "enhance" the game in various ways. I was just saying that the game is good as is and perfectly enjoyable without any kind of modifications.

The mobile port but I think you already know that.
The decompilation is basically just the mobile version ported to PC.

Haven't heard about the "Community's Cut" before.

I do agree that Sonic 2 improved a lot compared to the first in many way and that it brought stapples (like two acts per zones, the spin-dash, bosses with a better gimmick and design, super sonic and Tails) but Sonic 3 improved again in some way where Sonic 2 was flawed (like the ability to replay previous levels, keeping Super Sonic after finishing the game, having Tails be able to fly, etc...)

This is good to see fans doing the work. Hope that Sonic Origins will eventually come to Steam with Sonic 2's remaster.

The Community's cut is basically Sonic 2 Westside Island Revisited but it was put on hold when the Decompilation got released.

Why it shouldn't be released on Steam? It's a one thing to port a big complex but ancient game that prolly won't sell too hot so taking Epic's money was a great choice - it requires a lot of resources and it's an obvious move to rip off some guy named Tim who throws money down the drain at any chance he gets.
It's completely different situation with Origins - it's current game on current platforms, there is little to no issues to release it on Steam and reap them profits. That one runs on Star engine (Mania's one) so we are definitely getting not only proper Sonic 1-2 for PC but also Sonic 3&K remastered. The only issue was legal in the first place. FINALLY.
