or you can use the cheat to crash s3&k

there is away to unlock sonic and knuckles you have to crash s3&k to get it to pop up 1st do the debug cheat then go into a lvl drop a ton of s boxs then start grinding them over and over till game crashs when it restarts if done right you will see

This is like suggesting someone to hack a traffic light in order to force it to display a red light so you can cross the street instead of just waiting 20 seconds to do so.

Just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ download the workshop rom and call it a day instead of going out of your way in an extremely convoluted way...

Thank you for all the answers. Unfortunately, it seems I can't mod Sonic 3 nor Sonic 2. Sonic 1 mods works perfectly fine but Sonic 3 doesn't. No mod appears. Unfortunately, the other suggested solutions were not comfortable enough to justify to avoid using an emulator. :-(

Thank you very much for trying ! I guess I'll wait Sega decides to sell Sonic & Knuckles alone or an update that'd fix the Sonic 3 mods problem.

The mods are simply roms, so if you download a workshop mod of S&K (Like the one I linked), go to the workshop folder and grab the rom from there you can then simply replace the one the collection comes with with the workshop rom and call it a day.

So, if anyone else suffers because he's desperately wanting to have the original Sonic & Knuckles game, the best solution I found was to use the "Sonic 3 Complete" mod. You can find it here :

This mod contains both Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and the sphere mode. That's about everything you'd hope. You even can chose in the options what musics you want (Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles musics). It works like a charm and I am perfectly satisfied !

To replace the mod, I needed these both threads :

This is what you have to do :

1.First, download Sonic 3 Complete. You will need the .bin file very soon.
Note that if you downloaded it through the workshop, you will find the game here : (...)/steam/steamapps/workshop/content/34270/674578957/Sonic3C.bin.

2. Rename the .bin file as g0042.bin

3. Then you will need to find Sonic 3 & Knuckles
It is located in (...)/steam/steamapps/common/Sega Classics/Data/g0042.apk

4. Download this very useful tool named PscdPack :

5. Run PscdPack and click on the "new/open" button. Locate and open the g0042.apk file you checked earlier. Then click on the "Replace ROM" button. This time, locate and select g0042.bin. Click on the Save button and enjoy your new Sonic 3 game :-)

Keep in mind that Sonic 3 Complete does changes a few things here and there even if you play it on S&K-only mode so it's not exactly the same thing as playing a real S&K ROM, although it really shouldn't matter since it's mostly bugfixes and whatnot.
