However, sometimes games are updated to remove certain parts, such as licensed music. Normally, the company let's previous-owner keeps it and adds a "new" version of it available to new buyers (GTA:VC), but for some weird reason, I believe that same company updated everyone's GTA:SA and removed some songs to even current owners.
I'm 99.9% sure we're not going to lose S3&K, I just wanted to update the history of games being updated so they can continue selling it.
In case you don't know what's that about. SEGA doesn't actually own the rights for the music of Sonic games and they pay royalties in case the songs would ever be used, yes, even for Green Hill, they basically have to pay Nakamura everytime a song of his is used(the songs that were originally composed by him are also missing from Sonic Mania official soundtrack release).
In case of Sonic 3 and Knuckles, the soundtrack was composed by a bigger number of people and they would need to pay every single one of them and I would assume SEGA don't want that, keeping in mind that they would need to pay royalties for both the team that worked on Sonic 3's soundtrack and the one that have worked on Sonic and Knuckles' soundtrack.
I found out about this recently, since for the most part we were being kept in the dark(for obvious reasons, it's a bit embarassing for SEGA that they don't even own the rights to the iconic Green Hil theme). I knew for a while about the legal action from 2012 regarding Sonic 3 on Steam and the fact that SEGA owed money for a lot people, but I mostly threw assumptions. After finding out about the copyright stuff about Nakamura's tracks, I took a guess that the same thing would apply to Sonic 3 and knowing Sonic 3 and Knuckles' big music team, it makes sense.
i was pondering a answer to this and the only reasons that i can think of this game getiing removed is becuase : it was getting remade (wich is very unlikly as sega already said no to a remake by christian whitehead) OR the more likly reason is that something is happening lawsuit wise that we dont know about OR they are changing it to a standalone game
