Couple of questions about ROMs included
There is some information I would like to have concerning the versions of ROMs found in this release:

  • Some MD/Gen games have different regional versions and revisions. Does this collection offer any alternative versions of the included games? In particular, does the collection's version of Wonder Boy in Monster World have both the English and Japanese release?
  • What format do the ROMs in this collection use? Can you copy the ROMs for use with another emulator if you want to buy the ROMs legally but prefer different emulation software than the one supplied with the collection?

Thanks in advance!

The ROMs are in either .68k or .sgd format, and yes you can use those ROMs on another emulator. It seems to only download all regional variants of certain games, like Streets of Rage 3.

Thank you! That is exactly what I wanted to know.

Yep, only very few games have mutiple region ROMs. Lucky for you, Monster World has both J and NA one. Emulators don't give you any choice, they just lay in the folder.

Also, note that emulator itself uses compressed ROMs in data folder. You can use tool somewhere to get ROMs from it.

Not all of it is jolly. Here are hiccups:
1) Revenge of Shinobi in uncompressed folder is Virtual Console revision while in data folder I found a compressed ROM of revision 02 instead. Simple Launcher uses that one.

2) Sega, seemingly by mistake, put a Japanese version of Phantasy Star 4 in uncompressed folder, so if you are whitey-knightey you will have to use tool to get US ROM from compressed file in data folder.

3) Alien Soldier ROM is European, which has music optimized for 50hz but not gameplay thus it's slower. Sega has never touched the Japanese Alien Soldier that was uploaded on Steam Workshop as a mod so you can just download that, I think they are fine with it. Mods on Steam Workshop aren't really mods but ROM files with "you have to own this game" attached to it. Then gotta find in what folder Steam Workshop files are.

4) There is only ROM for combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles. No separate ones, no other combinations. Steam Workshop, I guess? Or just get Sonic 3 Complete mod there while it.

So yea, depends on how far you are willing to go with being a proper honest to god citizen.

Thank you for that information. That is genuinely good to know when deciding which individual titles to pick. I tend to prefer the spirit of law over the letter of law so I think that when you purchase game/ROM legally, there is nothing wrong with extracting/downloading the game from other sources.
