Controller Support
Does this have any built in & what would it look like (if possible) to make a profile in XPadder?

Also you will really miss using a mouse to aim, especially with lasers that fire for almost a full second, during which you want it hitting the same spot as much as possible.

You can play fine with about 9 or 10 buttons not including the joysticks for movement/throttle though if you really want to go that route.

What he said. The game natively supports controllers. You literally can not play with only a controller, and your aim would be crap if you tried to map that part to a controller anyway. Even though it's possible to use, it's just not that kind of game.

Most of my Xbox 360 profiles use 2 modifiers giving me 36 programable inputs to map without any axis modifications. I could sqeeze in 6 more if I wanted to.

I'm a controller only kind a guy and I;ve never used a mouse & keyboard. Don't even have a desk. Just a kick arse 4790k/980ti + big screen couch gaming :)

It might be neat to use the control for movement in one hand mouse in the other, I think Im going to try that out.

If you want to go that way I would suggest maybe playing with mechs that have LRMs or ballistic weapons(though these will be harder to use then the LRMs) they will be much easier for you to aim. LRMs are Long Range Missles for reference.

I use a controller and mouse...you really need to use the mouse for aiming.
ZacMcCracken Dec 10, 2015 @ 6:41pm
Long range aiming in this game is about millimeters. If you can achieve that with the controller you use then you are fine, but most friends I have in the game either use mouse & keyboard or mouse & joystick.
For you, mouse & controller might work fine too.

Me too. I play MWO with a wireless mouse and keyboard. Controllers are not a viable option in this game.

Yet. . .me and about a dozen others are trying to get Russ & Co. to doa better job on Joystick support as well as Controllers.

It sucks when I used my Extreme 3D Pro from Logitech in the testing grounds. So for now, I'm using the old stand by's: Key/Mouse. That is until they get off their arses and make it possible to use a JS again. Which would be nice. Hell, I wish they would make it possible using MW4 as a guide for using Joystick like the Extreme. It'd make gameplay a whole lot different.

I use a joystick just fine. I used a logitech 3d force pro till it broke. Now I use a Thrustmaster 16000m. The return spring was too hard so I opened the bottom and zip-tied two of the spring's coils together and it works like my old Sidewinder 2. You need to adjust the Controller sliders in the contollers tab to fine tune the in-game responses of your joystick.

Gamepads get a little overwhelmed I think. Fairly precise aim is needed. Usually on the fly.

Is keyboard easier... well it is the easiest route, but definately not the most comfortable. Aiming depends on the game and if it allows users to adjust the dead zone on the joy sticks. The better control over dead zones the tighter controller aiming is. I've had games that controlled as good as mouse, but only because the dead zone had such high adjustable values.

Mouse is better for aiming, but you can use a Joystick in your left hand for moving the mech.
Vassago Rain Mar 23, 2017 @ 2:59am
You literally can play the game just as well as any other shooter/vehicle game on a controller, without the advantage of things such as:

snap-to-target crosshair.
auto-aim.
bullets that adjust their trajectory to clip people you hover over with the crosshair.
mercy invincibilty.
and so on.

By default, it uses pretty much the same layout as crysis 2 and 3, with an extra 'turret' to keep track of. Obvious reasons, really. I find it plays about as poorly with a controller as the previously mentioned crysis games, so I wouldn't recommend doing so, ever, but if you gotta have some controller action, plug any piece of plastic in, and there you go.

Unlike the joystick support (god awful), controller support is a hardwired feature of their engine, so it's immune to PGI's tampering. Doesn't make it good, or viable, or anything, really, except guarantees that it works. Cryengine only recognizes xbox 360 controllers natively, so if you have a PS3, PS4, or even an xbox one controller, you need to use a wrapper to trick your computer into thinking there's a 360 controller plugged in.

First person view has no aim assist. Third person view has it, but does not display the map, so you'd be playing blind (which in this game is pretty much unplayable).
In addition, when in third person view, the camera drone floating above you makes it harder to hide your mech behind terrain.

On the other hand, there's something satisfying about people blowing their ♥♥♥♥ at an invincible camera. Especially the ones tossing autocannons and a few free-firing lrms.
