Have you see a controler with 40 buttons ? I have . It is called keyboard .
You can play fine with about 9 or 10 buttons not including the joysticks for movement/throttle though if you really want to go that route.
Most of my Xbox 360 profiles use 2 modifiers giving me 36 programable inputs to map without any axis modifications. I could sqeeze in 6 more if I wanted to.
I'm a controller only kind a guy and I;ve never used a mouse & keyboard. Don't even have a desk. Just a kick arse 4790k/980ti + big screen couch gaming :)
For you, mouse & controller might work fine too.
Yet. . .me and about a dozen others are trying to get Russ & Co. to doa better job on Joystick support as well as Controllers.
It sucks when I used my Extreme 3D Pro from Logitech in the testing grounds. So for now, I'm using the old stand by's: Key/Mouse. That is until they get off their arses and make it possible to use a JS again. Which would be nice. Hell, I wish they would make it possible using MW4 as a guide for using Joystick like the Extreme. It'd make gameplay a whole lot different.
Gamepads get a little overwhelmed I think. Fairly precise aim is needed. Usually on the fly.
Not counting analog stick(assuming it's for movement)

Is keyboard easier... well it is the easiest route, but definately not the most comfortable. Aiming depends on the game and if it allows users to adjust the dead zone on the joy sticks. The better control over dead zones the tighter controller aiming is. I've had games that controlled as good as mouse, but only because the dead zone had such high adjustable values.
snap-to-target crosshair.
auto-aim.
bullets that adjust their trajectory to clip people you hover over with the crosshair.
mercy invincibilty.
and so on.
By default, it uses pretty much the same layout as crysis 2 and 3, with an extra 'turret' to keep track of. Obvious reasons, really. I find it plays about as poorly with a controller as the previously mentioned crysis games, so I wouldn't recommend doing so, ever, but if you gotta have some controller action, plug any piece of plastic in, and there you go.
Unlike the joystick support (god awful), controller support is a hardwired feature of their engine, so it's immune to PGI's tampering. Doesn't make it good, or viable, or anything, really, except guarantees that it works. Cryengine only recognizes xbox 360 controllers natively, so if you have a PS3, PS4, or even an xbox one controller, you need to use a wrapper to trick your computer into thinking there's a 360 controller plugged in.
In addition, when in third person view, the camera drone floating above you makes it harder to hide your mech behind terrain.
