Hatred

My Honest Opinion Regarding Hatred...
No, I don't think this game should have been made. And yes, I think it should not be made available to the general public. And I know that by the time I wake up in the morning, I will be barraged with hate, claiming "it's my right to play this game". But let me be clear about what I have to say, and hear me out before you criticize me.

Here's the thing, I understand the right and I as a gamer have had to deal with the ridiculousness of Jack Thompson and other anti-gaming activists in the past. I've fought on online forums to end videogame censorship in Germany and Australia and have personally spoken out against those who think videogames rot society. I've caused rifts with my step-father over this issue, in fact. But I have to honestly say that this game crosses the line.

It is a good time to be a gamer right now, because we have wonderful games that show victories of progress against censorship such as GTA and Postal. Their very existences are victories of freedom of speech and expression. When I'm angry, I can log onto Postal and piss on some people and blow them up, sure, in all it's comical glory. On GTA or Saints Row, I can crush a cop or two with a tank and have a blast doing it. But...

When I do this, do I hear the cry of innocent people? Sure, I may hear a scream or two, a shrill "aaaah!" or, ala GTA, a "F*CK ME IN THE ASS!". But of course, this is all for comic effect. This is to relieve stress. With Hatred, though, you have the psyche of a mass murderer at hand... a genocidal maniac violently and brutally slaughtering innocent people in ways unseen by videogames since the Manhunt series, another game series I believe crosses the line. This game chooses to as seriously as possible portray thousands of people being murdered by a psychopath reminiscent of Adam Lanza or James Holmes. I love that a game like this can be made. I love the idea that people can gather around and say "I want to make a game about mass murder". But... does that mean you should? Should you make a game where you run around slaughtering innocent people? Where you just kill people who resemble your friends? Family? It's a question of moral responsibility more than anything. Can you make a game about Columbine? Yep. Should you? No? Right. Can you make a game about the Holocaust with Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels as the two playable characters? Yes! You can! And it's wonderful you can! But should you? Really, should you? No. You shouldn't. Yes, this game is fictional, and yes, it's your freedom of expression to play this game and your right, but should you? Think about it. If you need another example, think about the classic novel Frankenstein: Victor Frankenstein knew he could create life...but should he have? It destroyed everything in his life, so not really. Moral responsibility, people. That's what it's all about.

Yes, you disagree with me. And that's cool. But this my perspective on it. Do I hate you or judge you for choosing to play this game? No, I don't. I will probably try it myself just to see what it plays like. I won't be able to sleep that night, but oh well. If this game were never made, the world would be a better place. But since it is, go nuts, nobody will stop you. And that's awesome that nobody will. But it doesn't really make much sense.

There. That's my take on it. Hate me all you want, but I can't remain silent on something like that.

Genocide refers to the targeting of specific nationalities or ethnic groups.

Look it up, you clearly need to.
the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation.
synonyms: mass murder, mass homicide

"mass murder" and especially does not mean solely.

By your interpretation of this, Gacy would have been enacting a genocide against young men.

It's not a genocide game, it's a mass murder and spree-killing game.

I think the game is speaking on a national level, hence we see a nuclear winter approaching at the end.

That's a serial killer, you really need to look into what genocide means.

I did, but you apparently need to revisit google search if you think this is a genocide game.

"mass murder" and especially does not mean solely.

genocide =/= mass murder =/= mass homicide

Homicide per it's deffinition can be accidental unlike others, murder is deliberate, genocide is targeting specific people because of race/religion/beliefs among others. Those are not the same things.

"It is a very specific term, referring to violent crimes committed against groups with the intent to destroy the existence of the group." And unless I had a different video playing he says "I will put in the grave as many as I can"(referring to people) and the human race is a group.

While I disagree with your argument I respect your opinion. The people slamming you are the ones who have issues. I have a different viewpoint than you on why I will play this game. I look more as some have said in this thread about the game play. For me its easy to separate fantasy from reality.

There are so many other things in life that disgust me more than a video game. Whether it be a book, movie video game etc... its up to the individual to purchase, watch, play or read the item. I have no problem with people making games like this. As a consumer its up to you to support or not....simple.

I know that's what I wrote already, but you seem to have glossed over that in your attempts to cover up making your mistake in conflating spree-killing with genocide.

Get over it, and move on. We all make mistakes and get called out on them on internet forums.

I'm not saying I dislike the game, I just dislike the idea. For all I know the game play is great.
If this can exist in films (Rampage), then it can exist in video games.

The industry is going the wrong way right now. Full of SJW nonsense and developers/publishers trying far too hard to be politcally correct and socially accepted. This goes against all that. This game existing should hopefully make some developers realise that you don't need to pander to society to be successful.
