Symbol / Glyph Names
Here are the names of all the symbols, which appear on p. 7 of the manual. Note that I took some small liberties to avoid redundancy, such as omitting diacritics. They appear in (kinda) alphabetical order.

Ѽ 800
*This character is a Cyrillic letter omega with a titlo diacritic—used to signify that a letter represents its numerical equivalent, which, for omega, is the number 800. Using this instead of "omega with titlo" avoids confusion with the more recognizable capital Greek omega, Ω.
æ Ae
*Pronounced "EYE"
© Copyright
Ӭ E
Ҩ Ha
Ҋ I
*Pronounced "YEE"
ϗ Kai
ϰ Kappa
Ԇ Komi Dzje
*I think this might be pronounced "KO-mee JUH/JEH". Can someone verify?
Ϙ Koppa
Ѯ Ksi
ƛ Lambda
Ω Omega
¶ Pilcrow
ψ Psi
¿ Query
Ϭ Shima
Ͼ Sigma
Ͽ Reversed Sigma
★ Dark Star
☆ White Star

I see a lot of groups using their own homebrew names, in the style of best-guess-if-we-were-playing-Pictionary. That works, too—and in many cases, such names are more identifiable than the proper ones (among my favorites are "hangman" for the pilcrow and "left/right ear" for sigma/reversed sigma). Hopefully this list will help out for the more challenging symbols—or for those of us with stunted imaginations :)

No, this is the paragraph sign: §. The one in the game really is called a pilcrow sign.

Does it matter what they're actually called? I know for a fact that if I got together with my friends to play this and yelled "Pilcrow! There's a pilcrow button! And a komi dzje!" that we would absolutely lose.
Dlaw Oct 11, 2015 @ 5:07pm
I've seen ¶ used for "paragraph" as well, and that's what I call it. Doesn't really matter, so long as your expert/defuser can figure out what you're talking about.

Actually, not quite—though both symbols have very similar uses. § is called the section sign; it refers to a section of a document, and is often used in legal or technical material. ¶ is properly called a pilcrow (rather than "paragraph sign"), and is conventionally used to refer to a paragraph.

I agree :) The whole goal of this game is effective communication—to understand and make yourself understood, and to do so quickly. Whatever alternative names you choose to use instead of the proper ones, if they make you more readily understood, use them!

I put this list together because some symbols may be hard to describe. While it definitely wouldn't help to sling around the proper names if you're the only one who knows them, friends who play together regularly may agree to the convention of using the proper names for some symbols. "E, query, reversed sigma, kai" is a heck of a lot shorter than "three with two dots, upside-down question mark, backwards C with a dot in the middle, H with a messed up Y."

Thanks for putting up the proper names of these. I know the Cyrillic alphabet and it's kind of irritating to have nobody I play with know what I'm talking about. It's much faster to say 'zh' than 'two mirrored ks', for example.
I also thought that your 'E' was pronounced 'yo'?

I've also played with two people who weren't aware what a psi or lambda was, which is pretty bizarre, since I thought Greek letters were common knowledge. It really slows things down when we have to explain it.

In nay case, the lambda in game has a stroke through the head, which makes me think that it's actually a different letter, though we call it 'lambda' anyway. I feel like the 'smiley face' is a symbol in an Arabic language. Georgian maybe? I haven't seen that loop at the bottom anywhere.
