Yep, taking note of the button label and position is the better way !
Even better than that is to create a 5 row by 2 column grid, label the top row 1st column as "P" and the top row 2nd column as "#". Then at each stage when you are given the instructions write the position you were told to click in the "P" column on each row and the label in the "#" column...
Too complicated. Just ask them what the display is and then tell them what button that need to press and ask for the label that appears on that button. Then just wite that information down in a way that you find easy to reference when needed for that module...
If they really dont understand the manual, let them read the very clear instructions at the top.
