Some things are definitely annoying, the 2 most prominent issue, imo, being the godawful AI of teammates (which makes sense considering this was originally a MULTIPLAYER game, you weren't even supposed to play alone all that much, if at all) and the slightly disjointed story flow (Basically lots of short cutscenes and jumping to events going on which again makes sense due to the size limitation of the UMDs, the original game already needed 2 UMDs).
Honestly most of the bad reviews come from nitwits who thought it would be the next big budget FF game or something. Look at the PSP reviews and you'll notice it left a really good impression overall, ranking only one point behind FFX on 4gamer for instance.
I personnally enjoyed it a lot, I even bought the novels and the side-story manga about Kurasame because I wanted to see more of it.
If you really wanted to you could try to download it on ppsspp, give it a try and then decide if it's worth putting the money on the HD remaster.
Good day !
