Anyone else share their Steam Deck experience with this game?
quick update yea i was able to get the game up and running. I think the issue that caused problems was that i had tinkered around with the frame rate settings and stuff. The game does work perfect. If you're having issues i can post my settings but the game does work at this time.
DO NOT USE 'Highest' SETTING FOR ANTI-ALIASING!!!
USE 'High' IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT BATTERY, 'None' OR 'Normal' IF YOU DO
hey, turns out the performance issues on the deck were mainly related to the anti-aliasing settings!
my guess is that the 'Highest' setting is using a DX12 exclusive AA technique, and DXVK probably struggles to reproduce it. leaving it on makes the GPU consume around 10W-13W. for comparison, most games can run on the deck using 7W total, with GPU usage being around 2W-5W.
if someone reading this plans to play the game on the deck, or if your Linux PC is struggling to run it, here's what I recommend you to do:
1. in the launcher, go to the 'Graphics' tab and change the bottom left 'One-click Setup' option to 'High-Spec'.
2. change anti-aliasing from 'Highest' to either 'None', 'Normal' or 'High' (read bellow).
3. (for Deck users) 'High-Spec' defaults to 1080p, but since the deck doesn't support that, the game fails to load. change it to '1280x800'
now, the AA option choice will be mainly based on preference:
- 'None' disables AA, and leaves GPU consumption around 1.8W-2.3W, which is good. that said, you get what you expect: choppy borders.
- 'Normal' applies some simple AA, which ends up with washed colors, mainly on borders. that said, it does get rid of the choppy borders, and the consumption is pretty much the same as 'None', around 1.9W-2.5W.
- 'High' looks great, but ends up bumping GPU consumption quite a bit. from my tests, that was around 4-5W.
I'm fine with choppy-borders, so I'm playing with 'None', but again, that's up to preference.
and idk what they choose, but I've been able to run other games on the deck with FXAA and MSAA turned on without reaching those levels of GPU usage. my guess is that those are being used on the 'High' setting (which does double the GPU consumption), but 'Highest' either uses something DX specific, or had a terrible implementation. perhaps the latter is more probable, given the game is a port after all.
