Needs a "back" button.
I have dyslexia, makes reading awkward for me. Sometimes I see words that aren't even there, but my brain saw a few letters and decided "This word, it is here now" ha. Because of that, sometimes I will accidentally select a choice below the choice I want. I don't know how this happens, my brain's weird, but the fact is that it happens! Having said that, when I make a mistake clicking an option I didn't want, I would like there to be a "back one" button that will take you to your last choice instead of having to start all over. BLEH! I love the story, just not a fan of reading the same pages over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. And over.

One more thing, i can tell I'm going to really like this game regardless of that very annoying tidbit, so... you're working on more of these, right? :D

Choice of Games actually has a bunch of CYOA sorts already on Steam (and they have more on their website.) If it does well enough, they hope to put their entire catalouge on Steam.

that kinda destroys the concept of the game if you can just hit back on an option.
i get your problem and im sorry but it probably wont happen

Even with dyslexia you can triple read it, write it down/ make notes to make sure of your answer and then continue. It's a hassle but hey, as others state, having a back button destroys the whole concept.

"No backsies"
Even most attention deficit gamers can enjoy these ti rather great extent.

It could have a limit to go back once so you can't go back all the way.

totally agree. the premise of the game is that you have to live with the choices you make. sure, you could make a mistake and choose something accidentally but accidents happen in real life too and you have to deal with the repercussions of your actions. that's how it is in the game too, which is a good thing.

For what it's worth, I think it might be worthwhile. I've only done one play through (quite enjoyed the results of the attempt), but there were a few points where I just didn't really get the options and would've liked a back button, like for example in choosing programming language of my robot (as I have no idea what the relative strengths and weaknesses are of each programming lanuage) or... well, in a few other relatively meaningless decisions that aren't worth mentioning, but ended up contributing to the tone of my story branch in some way.

Basically, in those situations where the character would have a good idea of the pros and cons of a particular decision (even as minor as 'what the hell songs are these that I'm picking from in this scene? I've never heard of any of them!'), but which aren't clear to a player who lacks the background the character's meant to have.

After all, a back button can always be ignored or turned off if it's not your thing. Better to have the option and not need it, and all that.

i think at least a checkpoint/save would be nice. one slot, it just helps really. i made a few mitakes where i clicked options i didn't mean to by mistake and had to start all over. so its kinds of annoying.

at least allow us to go back to the previous choice only if we didn't click 'next page' after we picked the choice. to solve this.

I have dyslexia too and I feel that triple reading it destroys the mood. Think about reading an epic battle scene 3 times in a row and each time you get a blurry picture of the entire scene that the book is trying to describe. Even though eventually you can get the meaning of the page it still destroy the entire feeling.
That said, a back button will make a CYOA pointless as you can just repeat and replay with little cost. You will just lose the weight of every call you make.

A back button would just let you cheat at games like this.

While a back button could've been nice a couple times whilst playing, I don't think CYOA games should have one just 'cause it defeats the purpose of making the choice to begin with.

Hell of a necro.

But, no, they're taking the wrong approach by using illogical reasons anyway.

The back button isn't just to 'save face' and reset any mistakes. It would be useful for exploring alternative pathways without resetting to the very start. Nearly every CYOA book and adventure actually has this feature as default.

Choice of games is behind in this respect, mostly due to the limitations of the software used to write the story in.

On top of that, if a player wishes to go back to avoid a bad choice, that's entirely up to them to do. As a single player game it isn't going to hurt anyone. I cba tracking every choice and every consequence, so I barely remember how to get to a place again to pick the alternative choice in my games. That's a bit offputting.

♥♥♥♥ back button, no backsies, it's "like" in life. Learn to think about your actions.
ratz4hyre Aug 3, 2017 @ 11:41am
In life, you're not constrained to a few choices. Behind every small sentence describing a choice, there exists a plethora of consequences behind them.

In life, you generally decide your own fate. In games, your fate is decided for you. Failure to notice that difference makes it rather obvious that you're either disconnected from reality or that you're simply repeating the same narrative that everyone wants to spew.

Don't want a back button? Don't use it. Still overwhelmed by the temptation of a back button and can't resist using it? Your willpower is concerningly weak.

Not sure how you could possibly be against a back button. Just don't press it if you don't like it. There were a couple of choices in the game that didn't turn out like I expected. And I'm not talking about the final result but the actual action I took wasn't really what I wanted to to because it was poorly worded. In those instances I really wished for a button like that.
