4:3 with four (up,down,left,right) Black bars again

Yes 80TCS they did it again xD It is still sad that there is no working around this in Resident Evil Remaster HD without getting weird inventory and menus.

1. Facepalm...
2. No, I didn't even knew that Nvidia actually has a Control Panel with... Settings.
I've been playing games in custom modes by the power of magic all this time...
3. Keeping a 4:3 monitor (a CRT Monitor) gives me higher refresh rates... Oh, and ZERO latency.
4. A 21" 4:3 Monitor gives me more screen estate than a 16:9 21.6" with 4:3 letterboxed games.
5. Lower resolutions actually look better/smoother on a CRT Monitor and won't need upscaling...
1. Kisses
2. Now you know.
3. So does any modern monitor with much better image quality, higher contrast and more vibrant colours.
4. Right, because the biggest widescreen you can have is 21.6"
5. lol.. You don't have case. bye.

That's it? That was an awful. The point is not being able to get rid of the lateral bars in this game even on a native 4:3 monitor. Or are you going to say these games had lateral black bars back in 2002?

And by the way: CRT monitors do look MILES better than gigantic widescreen monitors for older games. Only people who played those games back when they were released understand. As those games are now either extremily jagged (3D games on ps2 as example) or terribly pixelated (320x240 pre-rendered background ps1 games) due to stretching and lack of scanlines + filters.

Just looking at the backgrounds of Final Fantasy VII for Steam makes me wanna puke. And the same happens if you try and run this game on the original PS1 + wide monitor. I wish i still have my old tube

I've got a 21" flat one just for those old consoles. I've bought it when they started disappearing from all the stores. Best decision.

I know excatly what you're saying.. It's like the Wii came out and it looked better in a CRT than in a LCD. I'm 32, I grew up playing PC games and I know what you're saying.. but it aint like that anymore. I tried to play Commandos 2 and Follout 1 in bigger LCD monitors years ago and it did look worse than in CRT monitors.

But new screens today (TVs and Monitors) has a whole lot of improvements that help in old games.

It's all depend in the quality of the product in you're using. If you got an LCD back in 2007.. yes, sure, it may look like crap today. But newer screens have a whole lot of configurations that will do exactly what you want and more. I play on a TV with tons of options and filters just like you see in emulators that make old 2D stuff look HD... I can play Fallout 1 with interpolation filter that makes everything smooth and less pixelated than original intended... even some kind of Super Eagle, Super 2X Sal filter my screen has... Also sharpness always makes a difference. Not to mention that I can choose the screen size directly on my screen to reduce a bit the size of the scale.

I don't even need to keep changing configs from game to game... I can save the ideal config for older games with pre-rendered stuff etc.. and a different one for newer games.

Look for a good monitor, specially UHD and you will have it all.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna spend a few thousand bucks on one of those... 4K, 3D, 50" something.
Because My used CRT's are still doing a better job at what they were supposed to be doing...
I'm talking about native hardware features and you're talking about upscalers... and filters...
That's exactly what beats the purpose of what I was talking about... And at insanely higher price.
You keep promoting your wisdom, while I'll gladly mind my own business.

That's what floats my boat... That being disregarding the latency and price differences...
I wonder what scaling algorithm or shader that I'm unaware of, can do better than that...
Or even achieve something close to that...
El Fuerte Aug 14, 2015 @ 7:48pm
I should've never got rid of my tube. Well i coudln't possibly predict how ♥♥♥♥♥♥, flat and pixelated my old games would look on my LCD. At least some emulators provide some filters.

Nice video.

1). Go here: http://dl.atom0s.com/?dir=Game%20Specific/Resident%20Evil/Resident%20Evil%200

2). Download RE0 - d3d9 v1.0.0.9 - by atom0s

3). Go to C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Local\CAPCOM\RESIDENT EVIL 0 HD REMASTER, open config.ini, make sure sure you have the following settings under [DISPLAY]:

Resolution=1280x960
Aspect=16:9

4). Go to your game install directory and drop RE0 - d3d9 v1.0.0.9 - by atom0s contents there

5). Open d3d9proxy.ini and edit the following lines:

[Use_Direct3D9Wrapper]
enabled = 1

[Patch_RenderResolution]
enabled = 1
width = 666
height = 399

If your 5:4 monitor has the same max resolution as mine (1280x1024), it will work for you, if not, you might have to experiment with setting different resolutions by trial and error, also in that case get ready for some serious headache, it took me days upon days to figure those numbers out for myself.

Also I have to say the end results won't be perfect, but pretty close to perfect.

Here is how in-game and inventory menus will look for me:
https://imgur.com/a/8c7UM
https://imgur.com/a/Fvn8s
So as you can see double black bars (up, down, left, right) are still there, but thanks to the fix at play they are so thin you can easily ignore them.

Here is a pre-rendered intro cutscene:
https://imgur.com/a/9kzUL
No black bars to the sides, tiny bars on the top and on the bottom on the screen. The cutscene itself is in 4:3 aspect ration, so those bars make perfect sense on a 5:4 monitor.

Here is a pre-rendered non-into cutscene:
https://imgur.com/a/AD06m
Pre-rendered non-into cutscenes were all rendered in 16:9 even in the GC version of the game, so you basically get in-game and inventory menus type of black bars with top and bottom bars significantly extended.

The most screwed up thing in the whole game is this new game menu:
https://imgur.com/a/JlYJT
It has been created specifically for the Remastered release, therefore it was never intended to be displayed in 4:3 or 5:4 aspect ratios, so one letter in "Game Setup" title is completely cut away. Good thing is that you only have to see it once per walkthrough, so it is not a big problem.

Every other menu in the game look pretty much the same as the inventory menu (thin up, down, left, right bars easy to ignore).
Esteban Paunero Jan 27, 2021 @ 2:19pm
Why in all posts of all websites regarding aspect ratio issues (and other issues too) are re tar ds that say "Duuuuuh but crt monitors are pointless blah blah blah"
You people need to understand that are people that likes to play in CRT monitors. Like me and another people.
And is especially infuriating when a game that is a remaster of a GAMECUBE game have a fake 4:3 mode with 4 black bars around a tiny square. and that fu ck ing square doesn't stretch in any resolution (even in 640x480. i already tried it). This port SUCKS.
Learn to understand people and dont answer s h i t comments like "why 4:3? DUUUUH" that wont help anybody to do anything. Is now 2021 and this issue persists thanks to people like you that talk so much but wont do anything.

Posting my results for future help if needed:
CPU : Athlon 3000G , 1x8GB Ram 3000Mhz generic , iGPU , ssd WD Green 128GB for windows , HDD 1TB WD Blue for games (including RE0)
Desktop resolution: 1600x900
Monitor: Old CRT Samsung Syncmaster 997MB

C: (it doesn't matter where you install the game, this file is always stored here) / Users / your user / app data / local / capcom / RE0 > Config file
What matters:
"[DISPLAY]
Resolution=1280x1024
Aspect=16:9
RefreshRate=75.00Hz
FullScreen=ON
VSYNC=ON"

Make sure you create the custom resolution if you have a similar setup.
Save, Read Only.

If you can't see the "appdata" folder when you enter your user folder from C: , do this: click on your windows button on the display or from your keyboard, enter control pannel, enter "appearance and customization" click on folder explorer options or something like that i dont remember the name in english, its the 3rd option, a small window will open, and there you will click on the 2nd tab of that window that says something like "show" , check ✔ on "show hidden files and folders" click ok, now you will see the AppData folder in your user directory.

Download "RE0 - d3d9 v1.0.0.9 - by atom0s" , extract , open d3d9proxy, edit this:

"[Use_Direct3D9Wrapper]
enabled = 1
width = 740
height = 416"

and in patch render resolution use this:
[Patch_RenderResolution]
enabled = 1
width = 740
height = 416

Close, Save, set as read only.

With these settings, i have absolute 0 black borders both in main menu and during gameplay, UI shows properly (maybe not in the one time you pick new game, but that's just once) and if you got any blackbars, you will probably be able to clean them out with your hardware monitor buttons , from the menu of your monitor.

Hope this helps, if you have any questions let me know.

I have not tried the RE1 Remake , but perhaps you could try the same principle.

Hello

Sorry to revive this thread but the black borders on my actual LaCie electron 22 blue model II PC CRT is pissing me off.

Thanks for the last suggestion, I now have the side black borders only using the atomos patch and copied the same resolutions as last replied here.

I will continue to experiment.
