Cant Kill Hunters
I am stuck on the cage puzzle, were you must have 1 character activate the sliding gates so the other can get the key. But as the last gate activates, those darn reptiles drop! I have hardly any ammo and it has been a slog! Does anyone have any advice or tips for dealing with them? Or is it better to just reload a LOOOONG ago save? Thank you!

Use the grenade launcher.

If you have around 30 bullets on pistol that might do it, but requires you having 3x health items at least. 3-4 shotgun shots for each hunter (cant remember if you can damage both) 1-2 grenade launcher, depending on the type.

Have you collected all ammo from the other areas?

The hall level of the game is the easiest. To preserve ammo and health, use the upgraded shotgun on Billy and mainly control him, since he has more health than Rebecca, and you can one shot zombie's heads off with the new shotgun you find in the hall in one of the rooms. At this point of the game, the grenade launcher isn't really needed so you should be able to use that for the hunters. If not, you may have to reload a long ago save and follow this advice here.
Thanks for the advice, I might just have to bite the bullet and reload a save as both Billy and Rebecca have 1 hit left.

I know the feel. Over 10 years ago, I was playing Code Veronica and I was at a point of the game where I was controlling Chris, but messed up as I saved on danger and couldn't do anything about it. Had no choice but to just start from the beginning. So it happens :) good luck

General advice: Dont waste more than one grenade on a single hunter.
They often tend to survive the first one and might lure you into instantly shooting another one right away. But their hitpoints are usually set in a a way, that they just barely survive a grenade. A simple pistole shot after the grenade often does the trick and kills them.

Hard to say. This is one of those games where you need to try to conserve ammo as you go, so if you've been using too much throughout your play-through, you might have screwed yourself. You can't really afford to kill every enemy you see. It's best to kill only the ones you have to to get through the area, and leave the rest. Many enemies can be avoided simply by running around them. Beyond that, I don't know what to tell you.

As a general rule, you should always save frequently and have multiple saves just in case when playing these types of games. The ink ribbons are not as scarce as they may seem, so put them to good use.
