anyway, RE1 is completely full of backtracking. it's an inherent part of the gameplay (exploration, item management and puzzle solving). why is it acceptable in RE1 and not RE0?
The negative reviews like to pick up on it too, but I am personally replaying for the first time since the Gamecube release, and I'm really not having such a bad time with backtracking.
I would actually say I backtracked much more on RE1 than this game.
Maybe you're playing on easy difficulty and just hoarding (seems to be the biggest culprit of backtracking and/or floor-space complaints I can see), or you're not utilising the two characters travelling together.
I am playing through on Normal difficulty and have rarely felt annoyed by back-tracking or item space on floors.
I recommend giving yourself a bigger challenge and putting the difficulty higher, or not carrying the larger weapons around all the time and teaming up more often.
It's only considered the worst if you're a RE purists.
Some absolutely hate it, but since it's an action game I found RE6 to be one of my all time favorite RE games. RE2 being second and RE4 being the best in the entire series.
RE6 removed what I didn't like, and focused on what I really liked.
But to each his own.
Re1 used item boxes in a way that was very convienent.
Granted it wasn't realistic by any means of the imagination, but in the world of video games it doesn't matter.
It just made it more fun and that's all that counts.
Had this game used both item boxes and the ability to drop items it would have been much more enjoyable.
Did my first ever blind playthrough of this on hard.
Was indeed quite important to hoard items and to keep going back and forth ensuring that your supply of ammunition and healing were always readily on hand upon reaching each new 'Hub' area I found, and after making a few more backtracking trips at the very end section/final boss battles, I was still even kind of close to not having enough ammo.
You have to make every bullet count and you definitely don't want to have to go back to places to pick up items you'll need later on.
