what resident evil game should i start with? since ive never played any of them at all

Agreed. Just make sure to try Revelations 2. The story wasn't very good but it brings back the feeling of the old Resi games.

RE is kinda like watching Star Wars, I enjoy them all. There is just a different experience with 1,2,3 vs. 4,5,6, they tell the same overall story but they are done in different styles. I would suggest you play them all. The best version I have played of RE2 and RE3 are on the GameCube, you can find the games on EBAY pretty cheap. RE0, Code Veronica, Revelations 1 & 2 are also cool games in my mind. I agree with the above list.

I would advice to do them in the order they were released, not in the chronological order, so :

1) Remake
2) RE2
3) RE3
4) Code Veronica
5) Zero

Then, all the others ones are not very good (RE4 isn't that bad but it's pretty different than the previous ones).

If you can only do the ones on Steam, then I would say Remake first then Zero.

Doing games (same as watching movies) in chronological order is pretty weird as it's not how it was made to be and you might lose a lot of references.

If you're interested in the RE story (It never did anything for me), do them in the order they were relased, not chronologically. Otherwise, just play RE Remake, RE2 or RE4, in any order. I guess RE3 is pretty good too. Code Veronica, Zero, RE6 and the first Revelations are easily avoidable Resident Evil games.

Resident Evil's story is a mess; coming from someone who loves it and tell you (no joke) what virus does what. Think of it as if Star Wars was a horror movie with B level acting/script writing; that's not far off. Now think of it as if Star Wars continued quality wise like the prequels and each time your favorite character got less and less likable. THAT is the story, plot holes and spelling errors!

So all in all you can play it in any order just... don't play the spin offs (besides Code Veronica because that was ACTUALLY supopose to be 3)

PS: Personally Resident Evil died when Shinji left Capcom.

RE 2
RE 3
Code Veronica (I know it's a spin off but it's supposed to be RE3)
RE 4
Revelations ( Doesn't add much to the story but it's a fun experience)
RE 5
Revelations 2
RE 6 (Most people hate 6 but it's fun for a while I suppose)

You have to play first 3 at least because they ALWAYS reference it in later games. But if you don't care about story just play it in any order.

and thats it, you can just forget and skip CV, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Revelations 1-10, ORC.
