I don't know if this graphical issue persists throughout the other areas beyond the train but can now see what everyone was talking about and why it's technically not verified. 😥
It's such a shame, I actually like RE0. I might have to delete this post as it's not true and I was wrong!
With all that being said I could still play the game (as far as I got), it didn't freeze or crash on me it just looks weird/bad with it's odd red/green light shafts/lines.
Ah, shame those bugs are still there! It'll no doubt be fixed at some point though in future Proton updates. I'll keep my eyes peeled.
Don't worry about your post, I too thought the game was fine at first, until I eventually made it to that Leech zombie.
I can confirm that Proton GE 7-49 fixes the graphics on steam deck. Thanks for the tip.
Using Proton GE 8-xx breaks it again, however.
BTW, I am running the game at 1280x720 with shadow & texture quality high and frame rate set to 60fps ... I do get 60 fps most of the time but the fan in my steam deck really goes vroom - switching to 30 fps makes it quiet down a bit.
Is that happening for everyone else too ?
I've been playing more demanding games already but the fan never kicked in this hard this often.
Do you ever try using the "performance overlay" to adjust things? That can help with reducing power usage and could potentially help with your heat issues. I usually run a game and then load it up to fine-tune things if needed.
Yes, I know about the performance overlay and have used it occasionally to squeeze out some more battery time.
It's not really a heat "issue" as it does not feel like my deck is melting any minute or something.
I was just a little surprised about the fan behavior given that the game is not THAT demanding (I originally played and beat the game on a haswell i3 with GTX 650 or 750 a few years back) and wondered if it is the same on other peoples decks - especially interested to hear something from the people with OLED decks - I read those have improved thermals - but I think I should start a new thread about that to not further derail this one.
I did notice similar with the Resident Evil 1 Remake on Deck (obviously the same engine as Zero). It was very power hungry, and drained the battery quite quick, despite, as you say, being an old game. It's probably engine optimisation issues. I think I recall it draining the battery from full to 10% on my then LCD Deck in about 1.5 hours.
Unfortunately, I don't recall looking at the Perfomance Overlay to check what component(s) the game was pushing hard.
I made the mistake of thinking it does, because even though it's listed as incompatible, I loaded it up and it seemed to work fine. About half hour in, I came to some visual bugs, including thin red and green lines, and even one camera angle outside the Save room, where the entire background wouldn't load and it showed color bars like from a dead TV station.
I thought they were just visual glitches that I could get past.
Nope.
Once I got to the scorpion boss, my game completely froze, I couldn't do anything, and I lost half hour of progress.
Visual glitches are one thing. But this has game-breaking freezes.
RE0 is NOT Steam Deck compatible.
